The Principal Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring parts, materials, and services from our suppliers consistently meet requirements. This engineering role leads projects at suppliers and at Medtronic to improve manufacturing yields, reduce costs, and lead initiatives to drive results as measured by Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This role collaborates cross-functionally with Design Engineers, Manufacturing, Regulatory, and Supply Chain teams within Medtronic, as well as with external suppliers. In addition to leading technical projects, this role will mentor rising engineers on the team.

This role is 100% onsite at our Boulder, CO manufacturing site.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Ensures that suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services.
  • Qualifies suppliers according to company standards and may administer a Certified Supplier Program in receiving inspection to ensure cost effectiveness.
  • Monitors parts from acquisition through the manufacturing cycle and communicates and resolves supplier-related problems as they occur.
  • Develops and prioritizes an auditing schedule to ensure that designated suppliers are audited on a regular basis to ensure good manufacturing practices (GMP) and quality standards are met.
  • Evaluates suppliers' internal functions to assess their overall performance and provides feedback in assessment of their operation.
  • Collaborates with Component Engineers to develop and deliver the Product Acceptance Sampling Strategy, Approved Supplier List coordination, Supplier Owned Quality deployment, and Control Plans for new products.
  • Define Receiving Inspection requirements as required and associated test method validation for all internal Medtronic Test Methods.

Minimum Requirements (to be considered): Requires a Baccalaureate degree AND minimum of 7 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR PhD with 3 years relevant experience.

Nice to Have:

  • Demonstrated experience resolving complex quality issues with suppliers
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams of internal and external stakeholders for problem solving and corrective actions
  • Experience with injection molding, electronics, and printed circuit boards
  • Experience in Quality, including root cause analysis, CAPA ownership, audit support, and creating quality records
  • Experience with Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP)
  • Knowledge of medical device manufacturing and Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
  • Strong communication skills internally and with suppliers
  • Desire to mentor engineers on the team
  • Certified lead auditor
  • Lean manufacturing certification such as Lean Six Sigma

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD): $120,000.00 - $180,000.00 This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
