Materials Engineer at Neuromodulation/Pelvic Health

Responsibilities may include:

  • Analyze, research, design, and develop materials and related fabrication/application processes to optimize materials for engineering design and application in structures, systems, and subsystems.
  • Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material science to develop metallic, polymer, and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Develop, analyze, and apply material properties to design requirements, processing parameters, and engineering specifications.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineers on key processes including: machining metals forming, welding (primarily resistance welding and laser welding), injection molding, extrusion, coatings applications (both metals and polymers), adhesives & assembly techniques.
  • Conduct material analysis, including failure analysis, of components, systems, and subsystems.
  • Evaluate materials and designs for Materials of Concern and develop compliance evidence for Materials of Concern standards and regulations.
  • Gather evidence to support biostability and biocompatibility of materials and designs.
  • Cross functional collaboration supporting projects throughout the product life cycle including technology development, new product development, and released product support.
  • Follow quality system requirements and industry standards to complete deliverables and other documentation. Identify areas for documentation improvement and implement solutions.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in materials characterization, testing methods, and knowledge of material properties. Working knowledge of standards and regulations including those related to Materials of Concern and biocompatibility. Working knowledge of biomaterials, specifically those intended for implantation within the body, and methods used to analyze biostability. Working knowledge of materials processing and interactions between processing and performance. Innovation and Complexity: Problem-solving mindset, may require understanding of broader context; makes adjustments or recommends enhancements to improve effectiveness.
  • Communication and Influence: Communicates primarily with internal contacts across matrixed organization; shares information, status, needs, and issues to inform and support decision-making. Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration.
  • Organizational Impact: Sets objectives for own job area to meet project goals; develops relationships to support cross-functional assignments.
  • Leadership and Talent Management: May provide guidance to entry-level professionals or support staff.
  • Lab Skills: Cross sectioning, metallography, tensile testing (e.g. Instron or MTS), optical microscopy, SEM, DMA, FTIR, DSC, XRF, TGA, XPS, rheometry, GPC, electrochemical and corrosion characterization (EIS, cyclic voltammetry, potentiodynamic polarization, electrodeposition).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires a Material Science, Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering with Materials, or Equivalent Baccalaureate degree and minimum of 2 years of relevant experience OR a Master's degree with a minimum of 0 years relevant experience.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$86,400.00 - $129,600.00 This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
