Mechanical Engineer Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing automated packaging, sortation, and labeling platforms to enhance the speed and efficiency of delivery operations. Responsibilities include providing technical ownership and continuous refinement of packaging, sortation, and labeling automation systems. They will collaborate with electrical engineers, controls engineers, packaging designers, and materials scientists to execute the design, development, and manufacturing of automation platforms. They will lead project and platform design evolution, ensuring systems are optimized for automation, manufacturing efficiency, and scalability. They will drive the development of packaging machinery and automation modules, ensuring solutions are simple, effective, and cost-efficient. They will champion sustainable packaging practices, streamlined supply chain integration, and reduced total cost of ownership.

Essential skills include proficiency in design and simulation software such as Solidworks, Ansys, Catia, and Creo. Experience in functional specifications, design verification, and functional testing is required. Strong skills in 3D design, including drive system modeling, load calculation, and bearing calculation are necessary. Expertise in mechanical design, static testing, torque, and bill of materials (BOM) management is also required.

Additional skills and qualifications include a BS in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering, 8+ years of design experience in industrial automation, experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures, experience in the design of custom mechanical components, and integration of sensors, actuators, and controls hardware with automated machinery. Focus on sustainability, efficiency, and cost reduction is also important.

The candidate will work onsite three days a week and must be able to travel up to 20%. The work environment involves prototype testing with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and varying temperatures. Adherence to strict safety protocols is required, and flexible hours are necessary to support testing schedules and coordinate with remote teams.

This is a permanent position based out of Westborough, MA. The pay range for this position is $59.80 - $62.41/hr.
