Engineering Manager, Graph Engine Team

A career in IBM Software means you'll be part of a team that transforms our customer's challenges into industry-leading solutions. We are an infinitely curious team, always seeking new possibilities, and dedicated to creating the world's leading AI-powered, cloud-native software solutions. Our renowned legacy creates endless global opportunities for our network of IBMers. We are a team of deep product experts, ensuring exceptional client experiences, with a focus on delivery, excellence, and obsession over customer outcomes. This position involves contributing to HashiCorp's offerings, now part of IBM, which empower organizations to automate and secure multi-cloud and hybrid environments. You will join a team managing the lifecycle of infrastructure and security, enhancing IBM's cloud solutions to ensure enterprises achieve efficiency, security, and scalability in their cloud journey.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Graph Engine Team. This team is building a new resource graph system to model, connect and query infrastructure resources, applications, services, and ownership. The Graph Engine team ensures that all data flowing into the graph is reliably ingested and efficiently queryable. They own the data ingestion pipeline, ETL and normalization logic, indexing, query performance, and the underlying graph database implementation. In this role you will:

  • Provide direction and set expectations for a distributed, remote-first team of backend engineers.
  • Own the delivery and operational health of your team's services.
  • Guide the team in making sound technical trade-offs while building distributed systems that are scalable, reliable, compliant, secure, and performant.
  • Participate in an on call rotation to ensure we support our customers and our on call staff when they need it most.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders in Product, Design, and Customer Support Engineering to define roadmaps and technical strategies that support business goals.
  • Foster diversity, inclusion, and equity within the team and across our organization.
  • Help engineers grow their skills and careers. Leaders are expected to spend time with their teams and clients and therefore are generally expected to be in the workplace a minimum of three days a week subject to business needs.

Required technical and professional expertise:

  • 2+ years of experience in a direct people management role for a backend or data engineering team.
  • Experience supporting highly-available, business-critical production systems and a commitment to DevOps principles.
  • Familiarity applying best practices for remote engineering work.
  • Experience using modern delivery practices to manage cross-team initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills: writing and speaking with clarity and brevity, tailoring messages for different audiences, keeping stakeholders informed, delivering actionable feedback, initiating crucial conversations even when it may be uncomfortable.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and customer focus.
  • A readiness for change and adaptability in dynamic situations.

Preferred technical and professional experience:

  • Experience working with any of the following: Graph databases (e.g., Neptune, Neo4j, Dgraph) or graph data modeling
  • Observability practices and tooling (Datadog, Instana, Honeycomb)
  • Cloud infrastructure platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Data-intensive applications, Pub/Sub systems (Google pub/sub, AWS SQS), ETL pipelines, data modeling, or large-scale data processing
  • Hashicorp products (Terraform or Vault in particular)
