Food Director Position

Dracut Public Schools is seeking a Food Director to provide each student with food of high nutritional quality in an atmosphere of cleanliness and personal care while complying with all federal, state, and local requirements related to food service.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish quality standards for the presentation and timely service of food.
  • Review current research information to determine health and nutrition-related trends and food service management developments, and develop innovative program changes and expansions based on this information.
  • Establish procedures to ensure that food is prepared and served in a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Visit and inspect all kitchen and cafeteria facilities and operations regularly to ensure that high standards of diet, cleanliness, and safety are being maintained.
  • Develop cost-effective menus that maintain nutrition integrity and meet all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Work with school staff, teachers, nurses, and parents to plan menus for students with special nutritional needs.
  • Provide menu & nutrition information online.
  • Supervise the preparation and serving of meals at all schools in accordance with standards as published through the Department of Education, State, and USDA.
  • Supervise the planning and preparation of any special meals required for district-sponsored events.
  • Collaborate with Health and Physical Education departments to implement a nutrition education program using school cafeterias as classrooms.
  • Serve as a resource in the development and presentation of nutritional education materials and activities.
  • Participates, as a member of the districts wellness committee, in the development of wellness goals and action steps around school nutrition.
  • Prepares & administers the departmental budget and operates within established budgetary guidelines.
  • Ensure all records and supporting documentation are maintained in accordance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Provide monthly financial reports with monthly claims and reimbursement information to the Finance Office.
  • Maximize all applications for federal and state subsidies including government surplus of food distribution.
  • Process all food service personnel payrolls.
  • Purchase all food, supplies, and equipment according to the law.
  • Develop purchasing guidelines to ensure purchased food and supplies reflect product knowledge, customer preferences, policies and nutrition objectives.
  • Maintain an inventory of all foods, supplies, and equipment and ensure that storage facilities are maintained in a safe, organized fashion.
  • Determine equipment needs consistent with program needs and budget.
  • Work collaboratively with the Facilities department on preventive maintenance.
  • Attend conferences and trainings to maintain knowledge of school food service guidelines and grant opportunities.
  • Screen and interview all cafeteria personnel.
  • Supervise and evaluate all cafeteria personnel.
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities for the districts cafeteria personnel that comply with federal, state, and local guidelines.
  • Qualifications:

    • Associate or bachelors Degree in food service, nutrition or a related field strongly preferred.
    • Minimum of five years of administrative or supervisory experience in school food service, institutional, or restaurant management.
    • Familiarity with MySchoolBucks and Mosaic preferred.
    • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs.
    • Must possess or obtain ServeSafe certification.
    • Must have a minimum of 12 USDA training hours.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • At least 5 years of relevant experience preferred.
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
