Advanced Medical Support Assistant

The incumbent serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant in the Health Administration Service at the VA Maryland Healthcare Systems at the following location: Loch Raven VA Medical Center. Responsibilities include scheduling appointments, ensuring appropriate patient actions are taken within the Integrated Scheduling Solution, daily review of active/pending consults, verifying and updating patient demographics, processing Veteran Identification cards, understanding complex regulations and eligibility criteria concerning veterans, assisting in processing Veterans travel payment vouchers, extracting medical information from electronic records, receiving and directing patients and visitors, relaying test results to appropriate medical staff, independently managing position responsibilities, participating in team huddles and meetings, notifying the supervisor when clinic access is less than desirable, coordinating administrative services for veterans, family members, caregivers, and general public, ensuring all necessary health/administrative information is integrated into the Computerized Patient Record System, developing and maintaining effective working relationships with all clinical and administrative staff, responsible for completion of personnel reports, rosters, and maintenance of supplies and forms, conducting special audits, studies, or surveys, generating patient workload reports, organizing and implementing quality assurance monitors, conducting patient/employee surveys, interviews, observing workflow, guiding patients through hospital system, inputs referrals, documenting complaints, and providing follow-up and suggesting resolutions to supervisor. Work Schedule: 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday. Telework: Not available. Functional Statement #: 25597-F.

Requirements include being a U.S. Citizen, proficiency in written and spoken English, subject to background/security investigation, and selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements. Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Qualifications include basic requirements of citizenship, experience and education, and grade determinations based on experience and knowledge of MSA practices, ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians, ability to independently set priorities and organize work, ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities, and advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
