Intern must be available to work full time (40 hours/week) during the 10-week program. Program Dates: May 29 – August 7, 2026. Location: This position is fully remote / work from home in the continental US. Work Authorization: US work authorization required for this role. Lumen's Enterprise Operations organization is looking for a DevOps Engineer Intern on our Network Transformation team. The intern will be responsible for automation of manual tasks as well as software development. You will need a high level of engagement and ability to take initiative, ask questions, learn quickly, and work in a team environment.
Script Development: Write, test, and maintain Python scripts to automate telecom-specific tasks such as configuration changes, or data analysis.
Troubleshooting and Support: Respond to automation-related issues and provide quick resolutions. Collaborate with team members to diagnose and fix problems.
Collaboration: Work closely with the team to understand project requirements, contribute to code reviews, and actively participate in group discussions.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of all scripts, processes, and best practices. Ensure that scripts are well-documented for future reference.
Continuous Learning: Dedicate time each day to learning and skill development, staying up-to-date with the latest automation tools, scripting languages, and telecom industry trends.
Introduction to the team, company policies, and tools.
Set up the development environment with necessary software (e.g., scripting languages, automation tools).
Begin training on Lumen systems, network architecture, and existing ATS automation scripts.
In-depth training on Python scripting, focusing on Lumen resources and APIs.
Start learning about automation tools such as Itential/Ansible.
Begin scripting small automation tasks under supervision.
Collaborate with team members on existing projects, contribute to code reviews, and refine scripts.
Work on assigned automation projects independently.
Attend team meetings to discuss project progress and challenges.
Assist in troubleshooting and resolving automation issues in live environments.
Enrolled at a 4-year accredited college or university, rising senior level education status at the start of the internship. Graduating August 2026 – May 2028. Preferred fields include but not limited to: Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering or related field.
Programming Languages: Proficiency in Python is essential, as it's a primary scripting language for automation tasks. Familiarity with other scripting languages like Bash or PowerShell is a bonus.
Automation Tools: Knowledge of automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Terraform, or Chef is preferred. Experience with any of these tools is a significant advantage.
Networking: Understanding of basic networking concepts and protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.) is beneficial.
Linux/Unix Systems: Familiarity with Linux/Unix operating systems and command-line interface (CLI) is important, as many automation tasks are executed on these platforms.
Version Control: Experience with version control systems like Git is a plus, as it helps in collaborative scripting projects and code management.
Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and debug automation scripts and tools.
Documentation: The capability to create clear and concise documentation for scripts, processes, and best practices is highly valued.
Team Collaboration: Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with colleagues on scripting projects and problem-solving.
Continuous Learning: Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools in the rapidly evolving field of automation and scripting.
Attention to Detail: Being meticulous and detail-oriented is essential to ensure the accuracy and reliability of automation scripts.
Project Management: Basic project management skills to plan, organize, and execute automation projects efficiently.
Internship compensation ranges depend on each individual's level of education, geographic location, and experience/qualifications aligned to the role. Hourly Based Pay Range: Min: $31/hour Max: $46/hour.
