Embedded Instructional Support Specialist
The Embedded Instructional Support Specialist works closely with instructors and students to provide academic support through workshops, tutoring sessions, and small group facilitation. The Embedded Instructional Support Specialist regularly attends class sessions to stay up-to-date on the course material, provide in-class support, and build positive relationships with students. This role designs and leads workshops that increase mastery of the course content, build relevant skills, and improve student engagement. The Embedded Instructional Support Specialist also provides one-on-one and small-group tutoring during regularly scheduled hours and at the request of the instructor and/or students. This role collaborates with instructors to identify areas where students may need additional support and align student needs and instructional goals. The role also participates in training sessions and team meetings to stay informed of best practices in tutoring and academic support.
This is a temporary position expected to end May 2026. Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States, as the College does not offer Visa sponsorship for this position.
Required Education: Bachelor's degree in a field related to the subject area in which you are interested in providing Embedded Instructional Support.
Required Experience: Minimum of 1 year of providing academic support through workshops, tutoring sessions, and small group facilitation.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to attend class sessions regularly to remain current on course material, provide in-class academic support, and foster positive relationships with students.
- Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with instructors in identifying areas where students need additional support and aligning those needs with instructional goals.
- Experience with continuous learning through participation in training sessions and team meetings focused on tutoring strategies and academic support best practices.
- Ability to design and facilitate engaging workshops that enhance course mastery, develop relevant academic skills, and promote student engagement.
- Proficiency in providing one-on-one and small-group tutoring during scheduled hours and as needed, with flexibility to accommodate weekend and virtual (TEAMS) appointments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support diverse learners in a supportive and inclusive manner.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Teams, SharePoint, Outlook and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching or learning in Brightspace or similar Learning Management Systems
- Demonstrated success in tutoring subject areas such as English 101, Chemistry 101 or 111, Introduction to Statistics, Accounting 101, or other introductory-level college courses
Hours per Week: 20
General Weekly Work Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week, with a schedule that may include weekends. Final schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
