Overview

Marathon Petroleum Company's Michigan Refining Division in Detroit, MI, is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative engineer to join the Area Engineering Team. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive mechanical engineering support for daily refinery operations and for leading the development and implementation of a portfolio of small-scale projects. These projects typically focus on upgrades or modifications essential for maintaining and optimizing existing process units. The Area Team Engineer reports to the Area Engineering Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the refinery operations area team as an active member providing high quality engineering technical support.
  • Execute refinery improvement projects, from conception through start-up in accordance with the Marathon Project Management Process (MPMP).
  • Manage multiple projects and assignments in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.
  • Lead preparation of decision support packages for review and approval by site leadership.
  • Collaborate with inter-departmental project teams to establish project scope, schedule, cost, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate procurement of engineered material for projects.
  • Interact daily with project team members developing and executing project objectives.
  • Confer with site leadership and project stakeholders throughout the project life cycle.
  • Ensure environmental and safety compliance, participate in HAZOP studies, and lead incident investigations.
  • Verify that designs and construction comply with industry codes and standards.
  • Ensure the management of change (MOC) process is followed by being the responsible person for MOCs and completing MOC action items timely.
  • Work with in-house designers and/or outside engineering contractors to complete the design and support the construction of projects.
  • Develop capital and expense project budgets, then own cost and schedule execution to meet the plan.
  • Update the refinery's process safety information and equipment files to ensure documentation is accurate.
  • Provide mechanical assistance to the Area Teams during process unit shutdowns/turnarounds. Potential for support to be required outside of normal work hours.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in oil refining or the petrochemical industry.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise with refinery equipment (pumps, heat exchangers, heaters, vessels, piping, etc).
  • Knowledge of refinery industry codes (ASME, ANSI, API, etc).

Skills

  • Excellent communication, time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc) and ability to easily learn other computer systems.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and effectively manage competing priorities.

Pay and Benefits

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill levels. The actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Schedule Requirements

This position offers a work schedule of 5/8's (5 days a week, 8 hours a day M-F, option of 4 days in office with one day remote), 9/80's (9 hours a day M-Th, Fridays 8 hours with every other Friday off).
