We're a fast-moving, engineering-led company seeking a Head of Operations to scale our infrastructure and drive cross-functional performance as we transition from R&D to commercialization.

LiquidPiston is seeking a hands-on and versatile Head of Operations to help lead the next phase of our company's growth. This is a critical leadership role for someone who thrives in a small, fast-paced, and technically complex environment. You'll work directly with the CEO and executive team to ensure the smooth, day-to-day operation of the company while building scalable systems and processes to support rapid growth.

The ideal candidate has deep experience leading operations in small, engineering-driven hardware companies (20–100 employees) and understands how to strike the right balance between structure and flexibility. This role requires someone comfortable rolling up their sleeves and managing a wide range of functional areas—from machine shop and procurement to finance, IT, and facilities—while enabling our R&D team to focus on breakthrough innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee core operational functions: machine shop, procurement, finance/admin, IT, and facilities.
  • Build systems and processes that drive efficiency and scale—without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Ensure strong execution on day-to-day needs while also driving long-term operational improvements.
  • Partner closely with engineering leadership to align operational strategy with R&D goals.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, resources, and vendors are in place to support rapid prototyping and early product development.
  • Help lay the groundwork for low-rate initial production as the company moves beyond prototypes.
  • Act as a connector across departments—ensuring alignment between technical, administrative, and executive teams.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives (e.g., cost reduction, capital investments, vendor management).
  • Foster strong communication and collaboration across the organization.
  • Lead operational budgeting, planning, and capital investment processes.
  • Define and track KPIs related to efficiency, cost, performance, and capacity.
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement systems that support scalable growth.
  • Lead negotiation and execution of supplier contracts, NDAs, and service agreements.
  • Evaluate terms for cost, compliance, and risk while ensuring alignment with technical and business needs.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure operational and legal considerations are represented in all agreements.
  • Manage ongoing supplier relationships and renegotiations as needed to support company growth.
  • Build and retain high-performing operations and support teams.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and regulations (e.g., ITAR, OSHA).

Benefits & Perks

  • Flexible PTO: We value work-life balance and encourage time to rest and recharge.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage—you choose what works best for you.
  • Equity Participation: Permanent employees receive RSUs (Restricted Stock Units).
  • 401(k) Match: We offer a 401k w/100% matching up to 3% of your salary and then 50% of contributions between 3-5%.
  • Career Growth: Ongoing training, mentorship, and learning opportunities to accelerate your growth.

At LiquidPiston, we embrace challenges, move fast, and celebrate curiosity. Our team thrives on collaboration, creativity, and perseverance. We understand that innovation involves risk—and we're not afraid to fail as we move forward.
