Product Design Lead

Subsequent to the establishment of the School of Data Science and LUIAS, Lingnan University is transforming into a hub for global leaders to develop and promote human-centric technology and social policies.

The Office of Service-Learning (OSL) is looking for a design engineer with strong interest in integrating technology design into Service-Learning for the betterment of human conditions and advancement of SDG goals. Successful candidate will lead an award-winning team of social workers, educators, designers and engineers to help students to develop ideas into impactful products. In collaboration with the United Nations University (UNU) Hub on Humanitarian Innovation and Technology (HIT), the candidate will work on a wide range of products, including transparent filtration masks, intelligent wheelchairs, low-cost baby incubator and energy efficient air-purifier. The UNU Hub also aims to harness Asia's innovation capacity, deepens South-South collaborations and foster synergy with UNU institutes worldwide. Successful candidate is expected to work closely with faculty and the service-learning team to develop local and international SL project for students. S/He is also expected to provide strategic directions for product development, market analysis, performance evaluation, GBA partnership, and liaison with industries and professional bodies. The candidate will also play an important role in helping students to participate in local and international competitions.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with SL course instructors, NGOs as well as private and public institutes to design, develop and implement innovative Service-Learning projects
• Provide supervision and technical support to students engaged in design and technology-heavy competitions
• Support entrepreneurship events and facilities, including student start-ups, coworking space operations, and programme promotions
• Design innovative mechatronics products, humanitarian technologies and interactive applications for making real impacts
• Lead the development of user experience/interaction of technology innovation
• Lead the effective visual communication of technology innovation to a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Requirements:

• A recognized university degree in Design, Engineering or Technology with 10 years' relevant experience
• Genuine interest in Service-Learning and humanitarian technology
• Extensive experience in coaching student innovations and leading student field works
• Extensive experience in product design and outstanding award-winning records
• Expert in creating 2D drawings, 3D models and assemblies using CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, or Rhino
• Professional knowledge of various manufacturing methods such as 3D printing, laser/waterjet cutting, CNC machining, injection moulding, and knowing which is appropriate for a given design
• Experience in designing products involving mechanical and electronic components
• Strong illustration skills and aesthetics sense
