Facility Support Engineer

On the Human Health and Performance Contract 2 we are at the forefront of safeguarding astronaut health, ensuring human performance, and advancing technologies for human space exploration. We are seeking a Facility Support Engineer at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX.

The Research Operations and Integration (ROI) Element of NASA's Human Research Program is looking for a qualified candidate to support ROI's ground training, data collection, and mission support facilities as we train crewmembers for spaceflight and conduct ground analog research in preparation for long-duration exploration missions. Support will encompass the following facilities at NASA's Johnson Space Center:

  • Baseline Data Collection Facility (BDCF) A ground facility used for astronaut pre- and post-flight data collection for protocols implemented by ROI on behalf of the Human Research Program as well as international partners
  • Moon-to-Mars Exploration Analog (MEA) Surface Habitat
  • A 3D printed habitat built to simulate a Moon/Mars habitat that is utilized for ground analog research in conjunction with the Surface Habitat
  • Moon-to-Mars Exploration Analog (MEA) Transit Habitat
  • A multi-module habitat utilized for ground analog research supporting development of long-duration exploration missions
  • Payload Development Laboratory (PDL) A mockup of the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS) and supporting simulated mission control facilities to support training of ISS crewmembers and ground support personnel
  • Telescience Support Center (TSC) ROI's mission control room supporting on-orbit operations aboard the ISS and future spaceflight platforms

Primary duties will include, but are not limited to, development of new facility capabilities to improve mission support functions or flight-like fidelity for training and operations, maintenance and sustaining of existing facility capabilities, and real-time mission and troubleshooting support for ground analog missions. In addition, the candidate will work with other engineers and scientists to design improvements to facilities as well as operations scenarios and procedures for simulations and analog missions, which may include but are not limited to simulated vehicle or habitat emergencies, simulated maintenance activities, and XR simulations to meet mission, training, and operations objectives.

You will:

  • Provide technical support for new projects: including installation, maintenance, testing, inputs to cost estimates, assessment of customer needs, operation of systems, and preparation of final recommendation/report to customer
  • Plan and execute maintenance activities for the ROI facilities and associated systems, software, and workspaces. This includes periodic system checkouts, replacing consumable supplies, maintaining facility hardware inventories, and maintaining general housekeeping standards for the workspaces
  • Maintain records of all maintenance tasks performed
  • Develop and maintain ROI facility documentation
  • Configure PDL systems in preparation for operations activities, such as ISS crew training or ISS system engineering evaluations, oversee use of the facility, and close down PDL systems when operations are complete
  • Provide crew and ROI personnel training on applicable ROI facility systems
  • Provide real-time mission support for the MEA Habitat Simulation System (HSS) during active missions, which may require work on weekends and/or evenings
  • Survey all facilities for potential upgrades and repairs
  • Ensure all building systems are running at optimal efficiency to support ROI activities
  • Inspect electronic equipment, instruments, and systems to ensure accordance to specifications, safety standards, and quality standards
  • Troubleshoot minor hardware and software anomalies and determine root causes of malfunctions
  • Coordinate with appropriate maintenance engineers to perform complicated equipment maintenance or repair
  • Provide resolution of technical issues to customers, Task Order management, and facilities staff
  • Provide periodic status reports of ROI facility use and support activities to Task Order management
  • Build and maintain trust relationships with key customers, JSC building management, stakeholders, and ROI team members

What You Bring:

You bring experience with integrated hardware and data systems and network configurations with critical thinking skills for troubleshooting and innovating creative solutions. You use your experience and judgment to maintain configuration for the project documents and websites. You comply with KBR's Safety, Health and Environmental Plan, Quality Plan, and all safety policies and procedures, and complete all assigned training.
