Modeling And Simulation Engineering Intern

Leidos Dynetics' Advanced Materials Department is seeking a passionate, detail-oriented problem-solver to serve as a Modeling and Simulation Engineering Intern in Huntsville, AL. This is an in-person position. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in an Engineering program at the Graduate level and interested in applying model development skills to real-world engineering challenges, including optimization and multi-physics problems. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific and IT solutions.

The Advanced Materials Department is a multi-disciplinary team that provides materials engineering expertise for every phase of a program. With backgrounds in materials science, chemistry/chemical engineering, physics, among others, the department has experience in executing a variety of efforts from R&D, to prototype development, to supporting design and build tasks for manufacturing. Beyond subject matter expertise, the department has the analysis equipment, multi-physics modeling capability and experimental lab space to support activities ranging from proof-of-concept experimentation to manufacturing support.

As an intern in this role, you will gain hands-on experience developing modeling tool chains for structural optimization and material response analysis. We are looking for someone with strong technical aptitude, curiosity, and the ability to think critically about engineering systems.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development of a modeling and simulation tool chain for structural optimization of systems to expedite initial design iteration processes.
  • Contribute to the development and anchoring of a multi-physics material response modeling toolchain for ablation environments.
  • Learn foundational concepts in optimization methods, mechanical design, physical and chemical behaviors of advanced materials to better understand end-user needs and system requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers on model tool chain development to translate technical requirements into model functionality.
  • Assemble documentation on technical background and user guide for future model users of tool chains developed.
  • Attend team meetings and provide updates on development progress.
  • Adhere to project timelines while maintaining high-quality work and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate initiative, curiosity, and willingness to learn new tools, frameworks, and engineering concepts.
  • Maintain clear communication with mentors and team members to ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Represent Leidos professionally and uphold company values.
  • Prepare and present an end-of-summer poster summarizing your contributions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • US Citizen
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Actively enrolled in a Master or PhD of Engineering program or related discipline at an accredited University
  • Interest in and strong aptitude for learning new modeling and simulation tools and codes in a quick turnaround
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to write clear documentation and communicate technical ideas effectively
  • Must be a resident of North Alabama area or willing to relocate in order to work on-site at the Huntsville, AL office

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Exposure to mechanical and aerospace engineering principles such as heat transfer, materials, structural mechanics, and/or fluid dynamics
  • Exposure to basic chemistry principles
  • Comfort working in Linux environments
  • Experience with optimization and uncertainty quantification analysis (Dakota or other)
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEMAP/NASTRAN, Abaqus, or other)
  • Experience with multi-physics modeling (COMSOL or other)
  • Experience with material response modeling (PuMA, MOOSE/MaCaw, OpenFOAM, PATO, DPLR, CHAR, Mutation++, or other)
