As the German National Library of Science and Technology, our future-oriented services ensure the infrastructural requirements for a high-quality supply of information and literature for research in science and industry. With the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG), we are working to revolutionize the exchange and use of scientific knowledge in the digital age.

The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology – Program Area D, Open Research Knowledge Graph, is looking to employ a Research Software Engineer for Ontologies and Knowledge Graphs to join the Team Curation & Community Building as of the earliest possible opportunity.

The position is initially limited until April 30, 2028. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The position is generally suitable for part-time work. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Your tasks include:

You will play a central role in the Curation & Community Building team and actively participate in the DIPONI project ("Digital Transformation in Polymer Processing: Interoperability and Machine Learning Solutions for Process Optimization and Sustainability Improvement in Industrial Environments") funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).

We are looking for a committed individual with strong expertise in software development. The goal is to develop innovative research data and information management systems based on semantic technologies, in particular through:

  • Developing and applying ontology-based data models (ontology engineering)
  • Implementing and maintaining OWL-based knowledge graphs
  • Helping to shape the strategic research and technology goals of TIB and the joint lab with Leibniz University Hannover

In doing so, you will make an active contribution to the digital transformation in research and the sustainable development of data-driven technologies in industry.

Your profile:

You have a university degree (master's degree, university diploma, or equivalent) in a relevant field such as computer science, information science, mathematics, or a related subject. You are able to combine theoretical concepts with practical application and have in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

  • Semantic technologies, linked data, OWL-based knowledge graphs and ontology engineering
  • Data management, integration and analysis
  • Software engineering and modern application development

In addition, we require the following qualifications:

  • Very good written and spoken English skills
  • Extensive practical experience with GitHub and common development workflows
  • Excellent knowledge of modern programming languages, especially Python

The following qualifications are also expected:

  • Proven skills in software development and the ability to develop mature software components beyond pure research prototypes
  • Extensive experience with data management technologies, especially semantic data management involving ontologies and OWL-based knowledge graphs
  • Experience and interest in working in research teams
  • Collaboration with other research groups in joint research projects

Desirable additions to your profile:

  • Knowledge of human-computer interaction and data visualization
  • Basic knowledge in the fields of engineering and materials science
  • A PhD is an advantage, but not a requirement
