Your Opportunity

Stantec seeks an energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter to join the Nashville, TN office as a Senior Traffic and ITS Engineer. Stantec's Transportation group provides a full range of innovative services to facilitate the safe, smart, and efficient movement of people and goods through a variety of modes of transportation infrastructure. Whether it's urban freeways, rural two-lane roadways, or active, multi-modal urban arterials, Stantec is actively improving transportation systems across Tennessee, and we are looking for the right candidate to support this work with our valued clients. While Nashville, TN is the preferred location for this position, Chattanooga, TN or Knoxville, TN will also be considered.

Your Key Responsibilities

You will apply your knowledge of Traffic Engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology to lead a variety of tasks including transportation planning, systems engineering analyses, traffic analyses, traffic signal and ITS design, and systems integration support. You will carry out job functions within multidisciplinary teams of Transportation Engineering and ITS professionals and support direct interaction with clients within the context of project kickoff and progress meetings, design reviews, project production, delivery, support, and analysis. Major results expected include high-quality written, verbal and graphical deliverables in the form of operational concepts, technology reviews, designs and specifications. You will be responsible for managing project teams and maintaining strong team morale. You will perform work which involves the application of leading-edge information and communication technologies to ITS, transportation planning, engineering, and operations. Stantec has built strong client relationships and a history of delivering quality work, which you will be expected to carry forward and expand upon. This will include leading and delivering established and recently-won on-call contracts with state and municipal clients. It is expected that you will uphold engineering ethics and standards of conduct in this role. The selected candidate will be expected to perform the following activities:

  • Apply general Traffic and ITS planning and engineering principles to solve specific Traffic and ITS related problems.
  • Lead the design and development or review of Traffic and ITS concepts, including requirements analysis, technology review and selection, development and communication of operational concepts, specifications development, and testing.
  • Develop or review preliminary concepts and/or specifications.
  • Research feasibility of alternative approaches, technology capabilities, previous experiences with Traffic and ITS deployments, cost-benefits, and client/regulatory agency specifications.
  • Write or review reports, participate in presentations, discuss concepts and deliverables with clients, and participate in quality-control checks.
  • Assist in the testing, deployment, operation, support, and maintenance of ITS systems including software, devices, data, and other related technology.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

- Demonstrated ability to manage team members effectively, delegate assignments, and ensure timely completion of projects.

- Good technical writing, analytical and communications skills, including ability to present concepts verbally.

- Excellent client relationship management skills.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 products, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Access.

Education and Experience:

- Degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related degree.

- Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Must be licensed in Tennessee or able to obtain license within 6 months.

- A minimum of 10 years of experience in Traffic-related or ITS-related subject matter, including design of Traffic Signals and ITS, with exposure to information and communication technologies, including fiber optic communication design, video systems engineering, traveler information, electronic payment, or traffic control systems preferred.

- Experience managing staff and handing out assignments.

- Experience interacting with clients and leading projects from beginning to completion.

- Experience in Signal Design, Signal System Timing, ITS Equipment Integration, Transportation Management Center (TMC) design and operations, All Electronic Toll (AET), High Occupancy Toll (HOT), and Open Road Tolling (ORT) projects preferred.

- Experience performing quality assurance, testing software applications, and technical document reviews.

- Experience with databases and/or database design or querying using SQL or a reporting software a plus.

- Experience with GIS appreciated.
