The Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM) conducts research in occupational and environmental medicine, toxicology, epidemiology and physiology with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. IMM educates students, doctoral students and professionals in, for example, occupational and environmental medicine, and is responsible for the master's programme in work and health and the master's programme in toxicology at Karolinska Institutet. IMM is a national expert body in environmental medicine. Researchers at IMM are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers and participate in national and international expert groups.
Occupational and environmental medicine is a field focused on identifying, assessing, and preventing health risks caused by factors in the work environment and the general environment. Risk factors may include, for example, chemical, physical, biological and psychosocial factors. A specialist physician in occupational and environmental medicine investigates and assesses associations between occupational and environmental risks and disease, works preventively, and with a societal perspective.
You will develop and strengthen occupational and environmental medicine research and education at IMM in close collaboration with the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Stockholm Health Care Services, Region Stockholm. You will conduct and lead research in occupational and environmental medicine and supervise primarily doctoral students and postdocs. You will also contribute to IMM's role as a national expert body in environmental medicine in accordance with Ordinance (1994:1244) on the Institute of Environmental Medicine. Your duties will include teaching in courses for which IMM is responsible, such as within the master's programme in work and health, the master's programme in toxicology, and the medical programme. The position is combined with a clinical appointment of at least specialist physician at the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific skills, very good pedagogical skills and clinical skills.
It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in occupational and environmental medicine at the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Stockholm Health Care Services, Region Stockholm and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in occupational and environmental medicine (in Swedish: arbets- och miljömedicin or the previous name yrkes- och miljömedicin) as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.
Since the employment includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership and collaboration skills (3), and clinical skills (2).
It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated documented activities in both occupational and environmental medicine regarding research and health risk assessment.
