The Assistant County Engineer performs professional engineering duties in the planning, designing, drafting and inspection of departmental projects and performs related work as required. Acts as the assistant to the County Engineer. Supervises and assists in the design and plan preparation of bridge, culvert, grading and paving projects. Reviews, prepares and acquires all regulatory permits and approvals required for the project. Prepares bid documents for the purchase of department road and bridge materials. Oversees the inspection and payments of construction projects in progress. Supervises and assists surveying crews. Prepares cost estimates on planned projects in preparation for bid letting. Performs and coordinates bridge safety inspections and submittals to the Kansas Department of Transportation. Contacts landowners and makes the necessary arrangements to purchase right-of-way for field projects. Evaluates and designs traffic signage and pavement markings. Assists the County Engineer in the preparation of budgets and annual reports. Attends meetings, conferences and professional development programs related to engineering. Determined Work Level: Level 3 Medium Work. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Ability to communicate ideas by means of the spoken word such as giving assignments or directions. Possess eye/hand/foot coordination sufficient to drive a vehicle. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Ability to maintain body balance to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
