Accountable to the Executive Vice President, Group President and SVP and COO, Care Delivery Operations, National Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) sets and advances the national strategic vision for nursing and patient care across the continuum, with accountability for advancing nursing excellence, including Magnet-aligned capability building and performance. The role leads the evolution of National Patient Care Services to strengthen national support to markets, elevate the nursing voice, and sharpen operational performance, while improving the day-to-day frontline RN experience through technology enablement, innovation, and workflow redesign. The SVP/CNE models a service-oriented, inclusive culture that prioritizes employee engagement, clinical quality, patient safety, service excellence, fiscal stewardship, and exceptional patient and caregiver experiences. The role leads, coordinates, and is accountable for market Chief Nurse Executives and related clinical services, ensuring enterprise alignment while enabling local adaptability and innovation.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Nursing Excellence, Practice, and Performance
  • Advances nursing excellence across all markets in partnership with other Care Delivery Operations Leaders and key national and market leaders to advance KPs mission, Enterprise Strategic Plan, and performance.
  • Leads innovative approaches to meeting the organizations clinical workforce planning strategy, including focused recruitment and retention strategies, nurse residency and specialty training programs, alternatives to agency use, outreach to schools, and seeking grants.
  • Integrates the goals of the professional discipline of nursing with strategic clinical, quality, operational and financial initiatives. Leverages evidence-based clinical practices, technology, and care delivery models to standardize systems of care enterprise wide to enhance safety, quality, innovation and experience.
  • Responsible for the achievement of clinical excellence as evidenced by outstanding performance in quality of care, experience, and clinical effectiveness.
  • Monitors and assesses state and national external environment and internal trends to adjust nursing strategy to meet changing business and market conditions.
  • Partners with labor leaders of patient care services and nurse unions through a joint forum to promote clinical excellence and Magnet-aligned professional practice.
  • Clinical Nursing Practice, Education, and Research:
  • Advances technology adoption to streamline operations, facilitate communication and optimize workflows.
  • Champions, models, and promotes service excellence philosophies and behaviors at the system level to enhance the overall care experience models, capability building, and measurable performance outcomes.
  • Establishes and sustains a national nursing practice framework grounded in evidence-based standards, Magnet principles, research, informatics, and continuous improvement.
  • Integrates nursing professional practice goals with clinical quality, patient safety, operational, financial, and workforce strategies to deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes.
  • Builds and advances national nursing research, science, and informatics capabilities, leveraging data and insights to improve patient outcomes, workforce experience, and operational performance.
  • Promotes advanced education, certification, and professional development for nurses and nursing leaders at all levels, including leadership readiness and succession.
  • National Market Support & Performance
  • Leads national efforts to improve the day-to-day experience of frontline RNs by leveraging technology to reduce administrative burden and enable nurses to practice at the top of their license.
  • Advances nurse-centered technology, digital tools, and workflow redesign to enhance communication, reliability, safety, efficiency, and professional satisfaction.
  • Partners with IT and clinical leaders to ensure technology investments are operationally impactful, aligned with nursing excellence goals, and designed around frontline nurse needs.
  • Champions innovative staffing models, workforce deployment strategies, and care team designs that support sustainability, engagement, and performance.
  • Clinical Practice, Education, and Research Leadership:
  • Strengthens the national nursing operating model by clarifying roles, accountabilities, and decision rights while ensuring enterprise alignment and enabling local adaptability and innovation.
  • Leads, coordinates, and is accountable for Regional Chief Nurse Executives and related clinical services through direct and matrixed relationships.
  • Elevates the national nursing voice internally and externally, positioning nursing as a key driver of care delivery strategy, innovation, and operational performance.
  • Partners with labor leadership, HR, Finance, IT, medical leadership, and external stakeholders to advance professional practice, workforce sustainability, and care delivery excellence.
  • Contributes to national governance, policy development, and enterprise decision-making related to nursing, workforce, quality, safety, and care delivery.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Fifteen (15) years in clinical and managerial roles in a multi-faceted health care system and multi-service provider setting required.
  • Fifteen (15) years experience with federal and state laws and related regulations such as: NCQA, TJC, and all applicable Medicare and Medi-Cal regulations.

Education

  • Masters degree in nursing required

License, Certification, Registration

  • Registered Nurse License (from any state) required at hire
  • Registered Nurse License (California) within 6 months of hire

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong communication and presentation skills required.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, influencing, problem solving, and analytical skills required.
  • Excellent leadership and strategic thinking skills and the ability to drive business results.
  • Excellent human relations and organizational skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a highly matrixed organization and integrated delivery system is preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a Magnet designated organization preferred.
  • Doctoral degree in healthcare field recommended.
  • Nursing executive leadership certification strongly preferred such as Certification in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) or Nurse Executive Advanced-Board Certified (NEA-BC)
