Senior Facilities Engineer – Mechanical Maintenance

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) brings innovative medicines to patients around the world. Within J&J, E&PS FM is responsible for managing the facilities and utilities at all sites. In Belgium, the scope of E&PS FM includes the sites in Beerse, Geel, Olen, Louvain-la-Neuve, Courcelles, and Ghent.
In Ghent, J&J is operating CAR-T: chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy. This is a new and innovative approach to eliminate cancer cells. It works by harnessing the power of a patient's own immune system. That power is created from the patients' T cells and is engineered to eliminate cancer cells expressing a specific antigen.
The Ghent E&PS FM team manages the critical installations, facilities, and utilities (steam, cooling installations, heating equipment, water systems, compressed air, high voltage, etc.) of/for the Ghent manufacturing hubs. The main goal of the E&PS team in Ghent is to ensure that the building and building systems are available 24/7 in a safe and compliant manner for the occupants and their activities. The EP&S FM team in Ghent is recruiting a senior facilities engineer – mechanical maintenance for the 2 production sites in Ghent and its future expansions. The position will be based in Ghent (Belgium), reporting into the facilities manager.
We are seeking an experienced and technically skilled mechanical maintenance engineer. This position plans, conducts, and directs facilities/utilities maintenance and engineering projects providing a full asset care approach to the facilities mechanical systems. Applying comprehensive and diverse knowledge of engineering principles and practices within broad assignment areas.
The ideal candidate must possess a strong knowledge of mechanical engineering, a solid analytical mind for problem solving, a nose for innovation together with good project management and communication skills with the absolute prerequisite of being a stress-resilient team player.
You will be responsible for:
- Facilities Asset Maintenance: Ensure clear and adequate maintenance contracts management. Act as the interface with key contractors for service, repairs, and agreements for facility and grounds. Responsible for all mechanical utility systems, projects, validation, and on-site coordination of activities and contractors in a regulated environment.
- Work Management & Optimization: Continuously apply the kaizen mindset. Identify and lead cost and technical improvements. This position must have a close connection with the reliability engineer regarding required changes/improvements/...
- Facilities Compliance & Safety: Maintain adherence to all relevant regulatory standards, safety protocols, and environmental/sustainable requirements. Ensure all activities are managed in accordance with QMS. Ensure effective closure on QMS documents (audit actions, NC's, CA PA's, CC's, maintenance records, etc.). Implementation of EHS requirements in general and specifically regarding mechanical on purchase and on installation of all new facilities equipment. Contribute to and live a proactive safety culture.
- Asset Technology & Data Integration: Utilize and stay current with the latest mechanical technologies, including IoT-enabled assets, to enhance excellent maintenance planning, reliability, and data-driven decision-making. Provide advice and technical guidance to and support the team on mechanical issues. Lead projects regarding software and controls. Lead energy saving projects and identify savings.
- Maintenance Reliability & Fundamentals: Apply principles of maintenance reliability, such as root cause analysis, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), to improve asset dependability and reduce downtime. Ensure eminent design, programming, installation, testing, and modification of modules, systems, and equipment applying principles and techniques of mechanical engineering in close consultation with the reliability.
- Leadership & Team Development: The E&PS FM CarT team is an unimaginably strong and gifted team. Fitting into this fantastic team is an absolute must. Very short lines with the reliability engineer, the scheduler, and the electrical maintenance engineer are essential. Supervises and manages mechanical contractors for Facilities projects.
- System & Data Management: Proficiently work with and within the computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track asset performance, generate reports, and support strategic decision-making. Ensure effective and high-quality data maintenance in CMMS.
- Budget & Performance Metrics: Detailed and rigorous budget management of the planned and running projects.
- Key Relationships: Establish and maintain excellent relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and our partners. Close collaboration with the reliability engineer, the scheduler, and the electrical maintenance engineer is crucial in order to initiate and achieve changes, improvements, etc. The E&PS FM CarT team participates as well in large(r) projects which results in maintaining good relationships with the E&PS project delivery teams.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience required. Excellent technical knowledge is required.
- Minimum of 5-7 years facilities management experience in facilities, utilities, and maintenance.
- Experienced in GxP and quality management.
- Demonstrated proficiency working with and within teams and strong relationship building skills are required.
- Proficiency in CMMS and latest asset management technologies, including IoT systems.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- You know how to deal with continuously meeting tight timelines. You are extremely stress resistant.
- You are willing to accept peak loads that manifest themselves in long days and long weeks and this several times per year (the shutdowns).
- You possess an outspoken 'can do' mentality.
- You are highly communicative, both written and spoken. Besides having a perfect command of Dutch, you speak and write English fluently. Other languages are an additional asset.
