Jacobs is seeking a Wastewater Operations Supervisor to join our collaborative team in Rio Rancho, NM. As the wastewater operations supervisor, you'll work with project staff to oversee the operations of the wastewater facilities, biosolids, and laboratory practices of our plants. Working with other members of our team, you'll apply knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools employed in the general operation of engines, pumps, valves, motors, and related equipment, wastewater process control, permit compliance, and safe work practices. You'll also diagnose operating problems and direct effective correction procedures; prepare required reports, evaluate actual versus budget spend, and maintain complete recordkeeping procedures; analyze recording instrument readings and laboratory test results and adjust various plant processes accordingly; perform plant inspections to determine efficiency of operations, cleanliness, and maintenance activities including remedial action in emergencies; and supervise, evaluate and train employees. Establishes and maintains effective sample procedures of wastewater influent and effluent, and abides by all permit requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works safely and adheres to established safety procedures assists department manager in conducting ongoing safety program
  • Oversees the process operations, installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities
  • Provides instructions and assignments to wastewater operators and communicates these assignments to the Wastewater Department Manager
  • Participates in the training of operators by creating and using training modules, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and other formats as determined; Participates in leadership trainings as provided by project management
  • Provides guidance with process/operational control adjustments, ensures facilities are within compliance, records data, prepares necessary shift and log reports; Abides by all federal, state, local, and Jacobs policies
  • Assists and determines proper chemical flow rates, treatment process changes, and other various related tasks for wastewater treatment activities
  • Assists Compliance Manager and Lead II with required reports (DMRs, Spreadsheets, UCR, SER); Maintains complete recordkeeping procedures; Prepares required reports to the client (i.e., monthly, quarterly, annually)
  • Request quotes while working with the Lead II and Lead I for replacement parts, equipment, chemicals, and other third-party services needed for operations, and provide this information to the project Logistics Supervisor
  • Diagnoses problems with staff, while directing and communicating necessary corrective actions to the necessary personnel (i.e., client, director, manager, regulatory agencies)
  • Ability to work with the client's staff and provide communication, instruction, and guidance as needed to contractors, vendors, and customers; Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during work (i.e., vendors, contractors, peers, client)
  • Be available as a "stand-by" point of contact support to assist department operators after normal business hours to provide guidance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and/or report on site if emergency conditions require
  • Use Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for scheduling, assigning preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) work orders, reviewing completed work orders to ensure accurate information is included and closing out work orders in a timely manner; Create, assigns and manages data through HACH Wims
  • Inspects equipment for needed repairs and maintenance while providing recommendations for future replacements at the wastewater facilities
  • Assists management in budgeting, estimating cost, and time for all aspects of repairs or replacements. Monitor expenditures
  • Performs and conducts morning PODs, assigning operators to designated shifts and preparing operators' work schedules; Provides instructions and assignments to operators; Adjusts schedules as needed during emergency situations
  • Ability to develop, review, and use Microsoft computer applications, including but not limited to Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, email correspondence, SCADA, and enter information into data management systems
  • Performs other duties as assigned, relevant to the department's needs

Here's what you'll need:

  • New Mexico Level III Wastewater Certification. Ability to obtain the NM level IV wastewater certification within a year of hire date
  • New Mexico Level IV Wastewater certification, ability to obtain through reciprocity within 6 months of hire
  • 5 years minimum experience operating wastewater treatment facilities
  • Experience with process control of conventional activated sludge secondary treatment
  • Self-motivation, team-oriented work practices, and strong technical problem-solving skills
  • Digital Literacy (I.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, CMMS)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Competent in operating PLCs, VFDs, and SCADA Systems
  • Experience with planning, scheduling, and inventory control
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ideally, You'll Also Have:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant operations; Reuse lines such as, operating principles of valves, pumps, programable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) Systems and motors; principles and methods of water analyses and bacteriological and chemical sewage analyses; effects and problems of industrial waste in wastewater treatment process; principles of supervision and training
  • Experience developing and working within an approved budget. Specifically tracking costs, adjusting activities to stay on budget, and optimizing labor and materials
  • Familiar with NPDES, Air Quality, and Stormwater Permits, and successful permit compliance
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, principles, and methods of biological and chemical sewage analyses, effects, and problems of industrial waste in wastewater treatment processes
  • Knowledge of principles of budget preparation and expenditure control
  • Experience working on pumps, motors, and equipment, controls, and experience using tools and materials used in maintaining and repairing a variety of equipment
  • Knowledge of laboratory practices and certification
  • Knowledge of computer software, including data management systems, HACH WIMS, and the ability to operate plant PLCs and SCADA systems
  • Demonstrates ability to engage and motivate teams
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the client, the general public, coworkers, elected and appointed officials
  • Ability to travel/walk to job sites to develop work plans with technicians and management
  • Ability to interpret technical data, blueprints, and regulatory documents

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

The work area can involve a working environment indoors as well as outdoors, which could cause exposure to outdoor elements; proper environmental attire will be required. Some areas can have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, airborne particles, noxious gases, pathogens and various chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.

Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, twist and bend at the waist, turn, kneel, squat, raise arms above shoulder height, grasp, reach, perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination to work on equipment, have vision sufficient to service equipment, have hearing in the normal range with or without correction. In an 8-hour shift must be able to transport self across the facilities, ascend and descend stair steps, lift objects up to 50 pounds from floor level to waist height, and wear and use appropriate safety equipment.
