Resident Geotechnical Engineer

As a Resident Geotechnical Engineer for building works on a public housing development project in North District, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the buildings in this development. We are currently seeking a candidate with the necessary expertise and responsibilities to fulfill the position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring contractor for compliance with contract requirements relating to Ground Investigation Contract, slope and other geotechnical engineering works in Slope Works Contract, Site Formation Contract, Demolition Contract, Foundation Contract, Building Contract or a combined Contract.
  • Watching, inspecting, testing and examining materials and workmanship of –
    • Ground Investigation Field Works;
    • Ground Investigation Laboratory Testing Works;
    • Slope Works;
    • Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring Works;
    • Other geotechnical engineering works associated with building, foundation, and demolition works.
  • Performing and/or reporting of –
    • Rainstorm Precautionary Inspections;
    • Typhoon / Rainstorm Inspections;
    • Emergency Geotechnical Inspections.
  • Watch and inspect the Works and to test and examine materials and workmanship
  • Communicate with the site supervisory staff of the Contract Manager (CM) on structural works and to submit monthly report to the CM on progress and quality of structural works;
  • Resolve on site difficulties arising from unforeseen circumstances;
  • Ensure the structural works to progress with minimum disruption, and in cases of action involving variations to design, consult the designer and report to the CM or his Representative;
  • Report to the CM or his Representative any matters of unusual aspect;
  • Maintain site records on structural work and to co-ordinate the checking of levels and setting-out of geotechnical works;
  • Monitor the progress and to produce timely information in advance of construction to avoid delay;
  • Co-ordinate builder's works requirements in connection with building services and deal with the consequential changes to structural design and to produce sketch plans and working drawings;
  • Check, supervise and inspect all Temporary Works and False Works as required in the Contract;
  • Attend regular and ad hoc meetings;
  • Assist the CM or his Representative in the investigation and to prepare report on the acceptance or otherwise the use of materials;
  • Participate the Quality Plan that is submitted by the Contractor to substantiate the fulfillment of Quality Supervision and Assurance Plan for foundation works, for site supervision and inspection;
  • Follow the Inspection, Test and Approval Plan (ITAP) for site supervision and inspection works;
  • Carry out the site supervision and management functions under the registered structural engineers and/or registered geotechnical engineers stream as outlined in the "Code of Practice for Site Supervision 2009 (2021 Edition)" and "Technical Memorandum for Supervision Plans 2009" and relevant Practice Notes for Authorized Persons, Registered Structural Engineers and Registered Geotechnical Engineers issued by the Buildings Department;
  • Participate in the weekly safety walk by the site staff of at least a professional grade;
  • Carry out spot checking of high risk construction activities by the site staff of at least a professional grade;
  • Carry out the quality and engineering safety supervision in accordance with SP, and checks the compliance of the ICU's imposed conditions and requirements prior to work commencement and during construction;
  • Check the design assumptions and ground conditions agree with the design and the approved Site Formation plans, ELS plans, Demolition plans, and Foundation plans as appropriate;
  • Carry out daily review with the Contractor of all high risk activities by the site staff of at least a professional grade; and
  • Undertake any other duties in connection with site construction activities/statutory plans.

Requirements include:

  • MHKIE, MICE or equivalent in Geotechnical;
  • Registered Professional Engineer (Geotechnical); and
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical design principles;
  • Experience working on infrastructure projects, preferably in public housing development;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Proficiency in English and Chinese languages.
