Equipment Engineering Project Manager

The Equipment Engineering Project Manager 3 will be an integral member of Intuitive's Automation, Equipment, and Test (AET) team. The Equipment Engineering Project Manager 3 will lead robust project planning, execution, management of project budget and resourcing, collaboration across a matrixed organization, and transparent communication and reporting in the manufacturing, delivery, and installation of custom and COTS equipment to Intuitive's (global) manufacturing lines.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in equipment engineering as follows:

  • Evaluates, selects and orders equipment that is most appropriate and cost effective for the manufacture of company products.
  • Oversees the installation, modification, upgrade and maintenance of manufacturing equipment.
  • Maintains current records on equipment manufacturers' technical notices, upgrades and safety issues.
  • Studies equipment performance and reliability.
  • Establishes programs and solutions for increasing uptime and for equipment problems that affect the manufacturing process.
  • Provides technical support to the manufacturing equipment repair and process engineering organizations.

Essential Job Duties (Specific responsibilities and tasks an individual would be expected to perform in the role. Additional job duties may be determined by functional people manager):

  • Align with the team on make/buy decisions, select suppliers, get quotes and drive purchase orders
  • Manage purchase orders and builds of equipment.
  • Manage receipt and storage of materials by project as it arrives.
  • Arrange logistics and customs paperwork for large systems shipping in and out.
  • Select and lead outside contractors in the fabrication and integration of manufacturing equipment and support them with change implementations.
  • Support finance related activities including creation of Request Capital Expenditures (RCEs), budget status, capitalization reporting, etc.
  • Leads the successful rollout of updates to equipment across (global) manufacturing sites.
  • Manage equipment spare inventory to ensure robust availability to the production line.
  • Manage the build, bringup and delivery of custom equipment to other internal customers.
  • Report manufacturing equipment performance including equipment events, downtime and issues.
  • Determine troubleshooting, maintenance, and calibration procedures for equipment.
  • Document the equipment requirements, specifications, design, setup, acceptance test, qualification, maintenance/calibration and operation in compliance with Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP).
  • Support assembly, bring up, and test equipment in preparation for successful qualification activities.
  • Perform qualification and validation on manufacturing equipment to fulfill company and government requirements.
  • Provide equipment-related technical support to on-going production operations.
  • Design and implementation of continuous improvement projects related to test equipment.

Required Skills and Experience (Specific skills, knowledge, and experience that an individual must possess in order to successfully perform in job):

  • Proficiency in mechatronic systems including reading electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams and knowledge of electromechanical components and motion control applications.
  • Ability to integrate mechatronics components into a larger system through wiring and mechanical assembly techniques.
  • Troubleshooting of complex electromechanical systems that include elements of motion control, pneumatics, vision and PLC programming.
  • Knowledge and experience in use of special mechanical, electronics and measuring equipment.
  • 3D CAD proficiency, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Ability to learn report creation and exporting of data from Agile, Ariba, Tableau, and Data Warehouse.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • "Self-starter" attitude and comfort in a hands-on environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent ability to manage outside contractors.
  • Ability to travel periodically as specified in the job description.

Required Education and Training (As applicable - Specific education and training that an individual must possess in order to successfully perform in job):

  • Minimum B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics or similar.
  • Minimum 4 years' work experience (B.S.), or 2 years' work experience (M.S.) as Equipment Engineer, Test Engineer, Automation Engineer, Tooling, Mechatronic Engineer or similar.
  • Minimum 1 years' experience in planning and managing of manufacturing of electro-mechanical assemblies and equipment.

  • Experience in SAP for purchasing and management of quality notifications.
  • Experience with ALM software such as Agile.
  • Familiarity with regulated Quality Systems or medical device regulations.
  • Familiarity with MRP planning concepts.
