Remote Api Engineer (Principal-Level)

A large financial organization is seeking a remote API Engineer (Principal-level) for a contract opportunity through the end of the year (with a high likelihood for extensions). These candidates can sit remote, but need to be able to work EST.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop scalable APIs to support real-time payment processing, including integration with FedNow and other high-volume financial platforms
  • Build and maintain distributed systems with a focus on concurrency, memory management, and performance tuning in Java.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure high availability and reliability of services, including failover strategies and service degradation handling.
  • Implement messaging and eventing solutions using technologies like MQ and Kafka to support asynchronous and synchronous transaction flows.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance through observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Grafana, and Splunk.
  • Support transaction scaling efforts.
  • Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and queuing technologies to handle gaming traffic from major providers.
  • Participate in incident management processes including root cause analysis and retrospectives.
  • Contribute to infrastructure automation using Terraform (or similar IaC tools), CI/CD pipelines, and release validation tooling.
  • Work on transitioning from on-prem payment rails to scalable cloud-based solutions, ensuring readiness for future traffic surges.
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership to anticipate and build ahead of traffic growth, ensuring system resilience and scalability.
