Role Overview

This position will serve as a Traffic Intern for the La Porte Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of traffic data analysis and project planning. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. Hourly Rate: The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor's degree.

A Day in the Life

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Performs complex traffic analysis utilizing traffic analysis software
  • Assists the District Traffic Engineer with various traffic study and project planning tasks
  • Conducts audits of various construction and permit projects, evaluating maintenance of traffic setups, speed limits, queues, and overall safety concerns
  • Attends field checks, pre-construction meetings, and pre-final inspection walk-throughs of construction projects, representing the traffic and safety interests
  • Reviews pavement marking documentation from contractors and provides feedback

What You'll Need for Success

Working towards a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field

Relevant work experience preferred

Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT

Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports

Analytical skills

Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
