Primary Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of meter service including, but not limited to meter reading, repair, installation, removal, and testing of meters and related equipment. This position is a union position with Illinois American Water and the starting pay rate is $27.54 per hour.

Key Accountabilities

  • Reads, sets, installs, maintains, and removes meters including remote meter reading devices and other equipment related to meters and meter installation.
  • Serves notices, investigates, and reports usage and leaks on service lines, mains, hydrants, and valves.
  • Completes new services, meter settings, and high bill inspections.
  • Collects water samples.
  • Locates and repairs stop boxes, meter boxes, and valve boxes.
  • Operates valves.
  • Turns services on and off.
  • Tests, disassembles, cleans, fits, assembles, and repairs various types and sizes of meters and meter parts.
  • Field-tests meters, when required; makes field adjustments and repairs to meters, when required.
  • Observes and reports leaks and/or possible leaks on services, mains, fire hydrants, and appurtenances.
  • Checks private parties using hydrants to see if they have a permit for use of the hydrant(s).
  • Inspects plumbers' installations.
  • Services and maintains all tools and equipment used in routine work.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong work ethic, communication, and safety skills.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be able to read maps.
  • Able to work with tools.
  • Basic computer navigation.
  • Knowledge of, or the capacity to learn, the company's policy.
  • Sufficient knowledge of math to handle problems involving fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Sees that the vehicle is lubricated and repaired, when needed.
  • Assists in receiving/handling equipment and supplies delivered to the service building.
  • Performs general maintenance work, when required.
  • Follows instructions or performs other related duties as required by supervision.
  • Keeps the meter shop, benches, and tools organized and clean.
  • Responsible for work orders from the time removed from the office until returned to the office.
  • Sees that the vehicle being driven is kept stocked with materials and is clean, neat, and in order.

Experience/Education

Graduate of a recognized High School or equivalent education.

Travel Requirements

Local travel to surrounding communities.

Work Environment

Must be able to work in various weather/temperature conditions and be available for after-hours and other emergencies.

Work Schedule/Hours

Full-time Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm (subject to change to Tuesday-Saturday based on operational need) Rotating on-call responsibility.
