This position is accountable for the preparation of contract plans for in-house bridge projects. The incumbent directs the analysis and evaluation of structural designs and plan preparation of bridges and highway structures. This position also oversees the timely review and approval of construction submittals and the investigations and solutions to construction problems associated with change of conditions, contract errors, or plan errors.

- ensures timely approval of all structure plans to ensure the timely receipt of final plans or construction bids.
- develops and interprets policies for structural design to assist the consultants, districts and counties in their plan preparation.
- provides field inspections of bridge sites to study construction problems and develop details for corrective action.
- manages all activities of the in-house bridge design unit to assure the cost-effective accomplishment of responsibilities.
- trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinates to ensure a well-developed and competent staff.
- performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- performs other duties as assigned.
- current registration as a licensed professional engineer in the state of Illinois or current registration as a licensed structural engineer in the state of Illinois.
- eight years of experience in civil engineering.
- three years supervising staff and managing engineering functions.
- extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering.
- experience with departmental bridge policies and contract plans.
- ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff.
- strong oral and written communication skills.
- requires a valid driver's license.
- requires occasional statewide travel with overnight stays.
- requires successful completion of a background screening.
