Housekeeping Aid Supervisor

The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor positions are located in the Environmental Management Service (EMS) and are responsible for all matters pertaining to section operations. This position is for internal to the service applicants only.

Responsibilities:

  • Planning: The position plans the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, and materials on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis; establishes and ensures adherence to work priorities, project schedules, resources, and detailed work plans established by higher-level supervisors; follows customary work cycles and sequences in planning work assignments; coordinates work through subordinate in accordance with priority; determines methods and resources necessary to accomplish the assigned tasks.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, storage and safeguard of housekeeping tools, equipment, materials, and supplies for his/her area of assignment.
  • The position instructs and supervises employees in work operations, conducts inspections of work in progress and completed to ensure cleaning and sanitation objectives and standards have been met; redirects resources to accomplish unanticipated tasks and assignments for emergencies, inspection findings, and work requests; tracks and reports progress on work assignments and requests authority to adjust worker assignments and to use overtime, equipment, and materials to meet schedules; and recommends changes to schedules, priorities, and work sequences as necessary and makes minor deviations in procedures or redirects resources under the position's control to overcome problems such as equipment failure, material delays, or unplanned staff shortages.
  • Work Direction: The position assigns work to individuals and provides technical direction and/or help in accomplishing difficult work steps and processes. Investigates and resolves excessive or low productive problems. Reassigns personnel supervised, and coordinates work among workers and other supervisors to maintain work progress and to meet schedules. Implements corrective action to solve problems as needed; and inspects completed work for quality and sanitation level requirements. Reports progress and work delays to supervisor(s); makes recommendation to solve resource problems and operational issues; and reviews work while in progress or upon completion.
  • The position checks the work of subordinates and evaluates the work for completeness, compliance with procedures and instructions, and sanitation quality standards; Instructs housekeeping employees in their duties and determines employee's individual training needs. Conducts training for housekeeping employees, using on-the-job instruction, demonstrations and other appropriate training methods. The position engages with numerous employees, in multiple services of the medical center or healthcare system, in carrying out day-to-day operations on a frequent basis to resolve problems related to staffing, work requirements and operations to recommend resolution.
  • Administration: The position supports and communicates management programs to their subordinates. Recommends promotion or reassignment, performance ratings, training, disciplinary actions, changes in performance standards, and the suitable applicants for vacancies. Advises and counsels workers on how to improve their performance and explain new work techniques. Investigates grievances and complaints, resolves them informally, and notifies supervisor(s) of sufficient importance or seriousness. Assures subordinates are following safety and approved technical procedures in accordance with department procedure guides. Maintains work reports and records and assists supervisor(s) in planning overall leave schedules. Interprets the EMS Sanitation Operations Procedure guide. The position reviews and maintains employee training records to ensure they have received adequate and updated training to accomplish assigned tasks. The position is responsible for adhering to the Master Agreement between the VA and Local Bargaining Units.

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.

Work Schedule: 3:00pm-11:30pm will work weekends and some holidays as scheduled. Please note this is a 24/7 operation and placement will be made to meet the requirements of the service. Work Schedule will be discussed at interview.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted.

HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service.
