With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Strategic Project team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission network that is required to support ambitious Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.
SPEN are currently recruiting a Senior Engineer (Civils) with a strong background in design of Enabling Works including Earthworks, Drainage and Roads.
Within Strategic Projects, the successful candidate can expect to manage interfaces with EPC contractors and OEMs to ensure their designs are innovative and meet requirements for engineering outputs.
The successful candidate shall bring their experience in design and construction of enabling works including: roads, earthworks, drainage including SUDs, platforms and associated temporary works required to facilitate the design and delivery of major transmission infrastructure. There will be scope within the role to develop skills for the review of structural and building-related deliverables, supported by the wider civils team.
The successful candidate will become a member of a growing team of Substation Civil Engineers reporting to the Principal Civil Engineer in Strategic Projects based at Aspect House, Blantyre.
What You'll Be Doing
- Key technical interface with Strategic Agreement Framework EPC contractors; accountable for Civil and Structural design deliverables, assurances, and standardised approach across of multiple large strategic projects.
- Provide technical support to the Project Development and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning the design, construction and delivery of civil and structural engineering design works.
- Define civil engineering requirements for input to the Project Technical Specifications and site information tender packs to engage EPC contractors.
- Participate in the development of pre-contract design of projects by supporting the technical development of concept designs to a level of maturity that can be progressed to detail design.
- Assess EPC contractor engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with Client requirements and review and comment on the design, construction and commissioning to ensure timely and compliant delivery.
- Undertake engineering review in line with SPEN governance, assurance and approval for EPC design calculations, models, reports and submissions with thorough attention to detail and delegated authorisation responsibility.
- Ensure civil engineering designs and construction practices are in accordance with current legislation, policies and operational requirements.
- Identify review and/or support industry leading or innovative solutions to reduce whole life carbon and promote sustainability.
- Ensure delivery is de-risked with input to early stages of design with EPC contractors regarding constructability.
- Contribute to Strategic Projects technical Initiatives e.g., new tools, systems, and approaches to exploit new engineering opportunities, such as BIM and sustainable solution, and new solutions from contractors and across the construction or other industries.
- Capable of delivering new and advanced engineering solutions to enable accelerate delivery of Strategic, HND and ASTI projects.
What You'll Bring
- Strong experience in Enabling Works including roads, earthworks, drainage including SUDs, platforms and temporary works during concept, planning, detail design and construction phases.
- Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.
- Ability to manage under pressure and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment with a diverse and demanding workload.
- Experience developing detail design in civil or structural engineering works for electrical infrastructure including earthworks, platform, drainage, structures and buildings.
- Ability to operate in an environment of uncertainty and incomplete information and make well-reasoned decisions. Lead by example and drive transformational change.
- Excellent presentation skills, including the ability to apply persuasive influence to drive decisions through engineering analysis.
- Experience in dynamic engineering environment with multiple projects and ensuring delivery of outputs.
To be successful in a role you will need to demonstrate as a minimum:
- Engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) and/ or postgraduate qualification (MBA, MEng, MSc) or relevant experience. Chartered Engineer or working towards professional qualification preferred.
- Proven experience of enabling works design and construction for large scale multidisciplinary projects.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable skills include:
- Experience and knowledge in the design and construction of electrical transmission networks at voltages up to 400kV or similar, with particular emphasis on Civil enabling works.
- Knowledge of Transmission Operator Networks health and safety and technical requirements and compliance
- Experience in preparing and managing site investigation works including geotechnical and environmental considerations.
