SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering £5.4b of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. As part of this, SPT Strategic Projects will be delivering a £3b portfolio of new overhead lines and new and upgraded substations, including design, engineering, construction and electrical works.

What You'll Be Doing

The Cost Engineer is a key role in SPT Strategic Projects focusing on the cost management and control of a subset of projects across the portfolio, working as part of a multi-disciplinary PMO team. The role reports to the Strategic Portfolio Cost Management Lead.

  • Budget management and allocations
  • Performs the month-end cost reporting process, including variance analysis and performance reviews.
  • Collates Value of Work Done data from various sources for the appropriate work area or project.
  • Analysis of cost performance to allow accurate forecasting.
  • Maintain the cost management tool and assure data inputs and outputs
  • Monitors overall cost performance including contractors reporting, ensuring adherence to budgets and agreed-upon cost KPIs.
  • Ensures alignment between schedule and cost baselines, collaborating with Planning & Scheduling and Risk teams.

What You'll Bring

  • Proven experience in cost management within NEC3/NEC4 ECC frameworks, ideally on large-scale EPC projects.
  • Strong understanding of cost management methodologies; RICS certification or familiarity is desirable.
  • Ability to develop and manage cost structures for complex, multi-million-pound projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, with confidence engaging stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and presentation skills, with the ability to interpret and report on cost data, trends, and KPIs.
  • Proficient in industry-standard systems including S/4 HANA, SAP, Power BI, CEMAR, and Microsoft Office.
  • Sound knowledge of scope change management and its impact on cost performance.
  • Experience integrating Earned Value Management (EVM) metrics into reporting processes.
  • Familiarity with NEC3/NEC4 contract options, particularly Options C and E.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage conflicting priorities under pressure.
  • Understanding of cash flow forecasting and Value of Work Done (VoWD) processes, including accruals and financial planning.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proficiency in IT systems including MS Office, SAP, S/4 HANA, and Power BI, with the ability to produce and analyse detailed cost reports.
  • Demonstrated expertise in cost control, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Degree qualified in a relevant discipline (e.g. Engineering, Finance, Project Management) or equivalent experience.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently and within a team in high-pressure environments.
