Our Chelmsford office is seeking Intern Engineers looking to help deliver some of the region's biggest and most complex public transportation projects within Rail & Transit for Summer 2026.

This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting the Massachusetts Rail & Transit department on assigned project(s) by performing basic engineering related tasks which may reflect elements of standard post-secondary engineering curriculum. Available Opportunities in:

  • Track Engineering - Assists with rail layout and alignment studies - Supports grading and drainage design - Helps prepare drawings and calculations for track geometry
  • Communications Systems - Supports design of fiber optic networks, radio systems, and data systems - Assists with video surveillance, access control, and passenger information systems - Helps prepare CAD drawings, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Signals and Train Control - Aids in developing circuits for switches, signals, and crossings - Supports layout of signal blocks and interlockings - Assists with safety documentation and compliance reviews
  • Traction Power - Supports design of substations, switchgear, and power distribution systems - Helps prepare load flow and short circuit studies - Assists with grounding and lighting designs for facilities
  • Overhead Contact Systems - Contributes to layouts of catenary systems and support structures - Assists with material lists and construction drawings - Supports inspections and field surveys of existing OCS installations

What You'll Do:

  • Assists engineer teams in various tasks and duties.
  • Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.
  • Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program

What You'll Bring:

  • An understanding of engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles at a basic level.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • An understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures and requirements.
  • The ability to perform basic engineering calculations.
  • The ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documents.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative in a dynamic work setting.

What We Prefer:

  • Completion of 2 years of post-secondary engineering program including:
  • Civil (Track Engineering or Overhead Contact Systems)
  • Mechanical (Overhead Contact Systems)
  • Electrical (Communications Systems, Signals and Train Control, or Traction Power)
  • AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
  • Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure
