Platform Engineer

The Platform Engineer is a key technical role, embedded within a Value Stream squad, responsible for the end-to-end reliability, security, and automation of our software delivery pipelines and hybrid cloud infrastructure.

This role combines the disciplines of DevOps (Automation & CI/CD) and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Working closely with tech squad members (i.e. software and data engineers, and SDETs) across the value stream, you will ensure our applications are secure by design, highly available, performant, and deployed with zero human intervention, utilizing infrastructure-as-code principles across Azure and GCP environments and as much as possible on-premises too.

You will encourage other engineers to self-serve as much as possible – providing them with reusable templates, designs and components and educating and coaching them to improve their knowledge and understanding of good platform engineering – to improve the overall flow of engineering and accelerate our ability to deliver value to the business.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, results-driven, and innovative engineer with a strong passion for automation and operational excellence. You must possess the technical breadth to navigate the full platform lifecycle—from security compliance and infrastructure automation to incident response—and the ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams. You should be someone who does not accept the status quo and will constantly push for the maturity of our engineering practices.

Main experience required is:

• Platform Knowledge: Excellent knowledge of Cloud native services, and containerized systems.
• Data services: An understanding of data platforms, orchestration, warehouses, data lakes and lakehouses
• CI/CD Tooling: Expertise in setting up and working with Azure DevOps pipelines or similar tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Puppet).
• DevOps/SRE Experience: Proven experience in a technical role covering DevOps and SRE responsibilities (4+ years preferred).
• IaC Mastery: Deep, hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform and Azure Resource Management (ARM) Templates and YAML and effectively managing state.
• Cloud Proficiency: Strong experience working on solutions in Azure and GCP (preferred) or hybrid cloud environments.
• Security Mindset: Understanding of threat modelling, risk assessment techniques, and application security processes – experience using and implementing SAST and DAST solutions.
• Monitoring Tools: Excellent experience of implementing and using various DevOps monitoring tools such New Relic or ELK – also understanding how to set up cost management monitoring in the cloud to ensure we are alerted to overspend and can optimise spend over time. Using the data to proactively make changes that improve performance, security, reliability and costs.
• Future Looking: You are interested, curious and aware of new techniques and tools that can accelerate the delivery of quality solutions – and are willing to experiment and adopt these when there is a valid use case to do so.

Key Responsibilities

1. Automation, CI/CD, and DevOps Maturity

• Pipeline Stewardship: Help to create, maintain, and secure the CI/CD pipelines for publishing code to cloud environments (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), ensuring fast, frequent, automated, and reliable deployments.
• Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC): Within you value stream, own the maturity of automation of all cloud and on-premise infrastructure setup and maintenance, utilizing tools like Terraform, Bicep, and Ansible to ensure environments are wholly scripted and consistent.
• DevOps Culture: Drive the adoption of DevOps principles and culture within the development squads, coaching and influencing engineers toward higher automation and continuous improvement maturity.

2. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) & Operational Excellence

• Reliability & Monitoring: Design, create, and maintain robust monitoring, alerting, and logging systems at all levels (platform, application, data) to proactively identify issues and measure service availability and performance (ApDex, SLOs, SLIs).
• Incident Management: Actively participate in Incident Management, Problem Resolution, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) scenarios, working to find pragmatic solutions and ensuring preventative measures are automated.
• Cost & Efficiency: Review, propose and implement time-saving and cost-optimizing initiatives, regularly reviewing resource utilization and implementing auto-scaling to match demand.
• Resilience: Ensure production and dev/test environments are secure, scalable, and resilient, with a focus on containerized and serverless systems, microservice architecture and highly-available data services.

3. DevSecOps & Security Compliance

• Security Automation: Automate security processes and security testing by implementing Security-as-Code principles and embedding security gates (SAST/DAST) directly within the CI/CD pipelines.
• Risk Mitigation: Conduct threat modelling and risk assessments, designing, implementing, and operating security controls to ensure all solutions are secure throughout the design and building stages.
• Vulnerability Management: Swiftly respond to new and emerging security threats and vulnerabilities, manage application security processes, and ensure security compliance is maintained across all environments.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the Head of Governance & Architecture and Group InfoSec to enforce security and compliance standards in the cloud subscriptions (tagging, naming conventions, etc.).
