GIS Analyst
Performs analytical duties related to the development and operation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to create, update, and maintain maps.
Salary: $45,011 - $81,120
Ideal Candidate: Our ideal candidate will have education and experience with geospatial analysis, mapping processes, GIS software and technologies. Under supervision, performs standard geographic information system (GIS) work while developing professional proficiency. Will work with an interdisciplinary group of GIS analysts, developers, and project managers. Generally, apply standard techniques and procedures in carrying out a sequence of somewhat diversified GIS tasks requiring the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning. Ability to detect problems in using standardized procedures due to changes in client needs or project direction. Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations which may include the following: Conducts data gathering, conversion and analysis of GIS data. Prepares data documentation or metadata for GIS Projects. Prepares maps and exhibits with GIS data sets. Participating in client needs analyses. Maintains continued knowledge of technology developments in the GIS field and use of GIS software. Performing such other duties as the Supervisor may from time to time be considered necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.
- Performs analysis of GIS data based on specified criteria and generates reports based on resulting data for use in projects, reports and decision making processes.
- Develops macros to generate reports from GIS databases.
- Maintains GIS databases; converts data from various sources for entry into databases; develops user instructions; and establishes and maintains related procedures and symbol set libraries.
- Designs project maps and databases; analyzes reports; and produces final prints using various types of plotters.
- Trains user staff and provides technical support in application of statistical and thematic mapping software.
- Serves as liaison with other County departments and outside agencies for effective system applications.
- Updates and corrects special project maps.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Job Specifications:
- Knowledge of GIS computer database development and management.
- Knowledge of computerized cartographic/mapping hardware and software.
- Knowledge of computerized mapping symbols, standards and terminology.
- Skill in the use and operation of computers and peripheral equipment such as digitizers, plotters and drafting instruments.
- Ability to read and interpret aerial photographs, maps, deeds and legal descriptions.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
- Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus in order to read computer screens and printouts.
Work Category:
- Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
- Associate's or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Geography, Urban or Regional Planning, Mathematics, Computer Science or Management Information Systems; OR
- An equivalent combination of education (not less that possession of a High School diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.
