The Role
In this role, you will be joining the mechanical design team and will be focused on designing and building the next-generation carbonation equipment. The carbonation equipment is part of Heirloom's core technology and requires a low-cost, scalable, and reliable design to meet our goal of removing 1 billion tons of CO2 by 2035. You will be expected to constantly challenge our assumptions and push the limits of design and manufacturing to achieve our ultimate targets.
As part of the scaled systems mechanical design team, you will independently lead complex electro-mechanical subsystems through the entire product lifecycle with cost and reliability as key drivers. You will design low- to high-volume parts for a number of manufacturing processes, including but not limited to: sheet metal stamping, casting, roll forming, extrusions, etc.. You will select and integrate automation equipment like motors, actuators, and sensors into your subsystem designs. Working with suppliers, equipment operators, and our supply chain team, you'll provide in-depth design for manufacturing and assembly feedback required to ensure that our designs are cost-efficient, robust, sustainable, and capable of high-quality results at scale.
What You'll Bring
- Minimum 5 years of experience in designing products through their whole lifecycle
- A passion for electro-mechanical product design, creative problem-solving, and driving innovation to create simple, novel, robust, and low-cost designs
- Strong engineering fundamentals to solve technically complex problems using first principles, data-driven methodologies
- Experience with iterative design and fast prototyping cycles
- Experience with engineering analyses, tools & methods like or similar to tolerance studies, FEA, fatigue analysis, root cause analysis, etc.
- Ability to produce clear, accurate 2D drawings aligned with production and inspection standards, with proper use of GD&T.
- Proven track record of working cross-functionally to balance competing requirements and design priorities
- Strong project management skills with proven track record of managing complex projects either as a project or technical lead
- A passion for mentoring teammates, driving best practices and standards within a team, and encouraging the team to stay motivated through challenges
- Ability to take full ownership of your subsystem's performance and deliver high-quality work on time
Bonus Points
- Practical knowledge of designing plastic parts (e.g. plastic injection molding & thermoforming)
- Thrives in both fast-paced, iterative R&D environments and the disciplined rigor of NPI execution
- Experience with powder and/or material handling systems
- Experience designing medium- to large-scale (2-4m height/length) equipment
- Experience with NX
You don't have to have every listed requirement and skill to be a great fit - you may even teach us something about what we should be looking for! If you are passionate about this opportunity and think you have the skills to succeed, please apply!
Why You Should Join Heirloom
- We are solving the engineering problem of our generation. Climate change is an existential threat, and we need as many of the world's motivated minds as possible to help. There is no greater challenge or opportunity than fighting climate change.
- We have done this before. We're engineers, scientists, and concerned humans from a variety of backgrounds and experiences who are pooling our knowledge and skills to collectively build a more equitable, prosperous future for all.
- We are a united, resilient, and optimistic bunch. We are all here for the same reason - to slow climate change. We recognize the magnitude of the challenge ahead of us, and believe we can solve it. We can see a hopeful future where we eventually reverse climate change. It won't be easy, but we won't quit.
- We are backed by the best climate partners in the world. We're well funded by investors from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Ahren Innovation Capital, Carbon Direct, Microsoft, Lowercarbon Capital, ARPA-e and the National Science Foundation. Our early customers include Stripe, Shopify, and Klarna, and we're building durable partnerships that enable us to tackle this decades-long problem.
