The Specimen Processing Laboratory Technician performs the pre-analytic phase of patient specimen testing to ensure quality results. This position also performs entry of some test results received from outside laboratories. Excellent customer service via telephone and in-person interactions with clinical staff and non-hospital employees is also an important component of this job.
• Follows policies and procedures (SOPs) to ensure minimal errors during the pre-analytic phase of testing during the receipt of patient samples; receives specimens from pneumatic tubes or from couriers delivering specimens from outside the hospital campus; evaluates acceptability of specimens for testing ordered; centrifuges, aliquots and delivers specimens to the appropriate testing area; prepares specimens for shipment to reference laboratories; follows policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors for orders received on paper requisitions during computer downtimes or from outside physicians; enters test orders into the EMR using the Requisition Entry or Order Entry functions and evaluates the acceptability of the information on the test requisitions and handles appropriately
• Follows policies and procedures in providing quality customer service; this is evidenced by respectfully greeting anyone entering the laboratory, answering the phone properly and within three rings; looks up and gives out test results when appropriate; answers customer's questions or collects information for a customer call back
• Follows policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors during the post-analytic phase of testing when entering and sending out results
• Completes assignments/mandatories according to policies and procedures, with complete documentation and within designated time frames; included, but not limited to: procedure and policy reviews, read and signs, Occupation Health requirements, section competencies, and hospital annual education
• Prioritizes and organizes work effectively to balance multiple tasks, while maintaining quality standards; assists others to maintain an efficient workflow and meet turnaround time expectations
• Functions as a self-starter, arrives to work on scheduled days and is in the section ready to begin work at the start of the shift; demonstrates flexibility with schedule to meet the needs of the section (e.g. scheduled/unscheduled overtime, extra shifts); stays busy with Eskenazi Health work throughout the assigned shift by assisting others or finding tasks to complete; ensures continuity of workflow by communicating with co-workers when leaving the work area
• Follows policies and procedures to monitor Expected Lists and Add-on test requests; utilizes problem solving strategies to resolve unreceived specimens or erroneous add-on requests; thoroughly completes documentation of issues to provide sufficient details for follow-up
• Performs all other job-related duties as assigned
• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory or other medical field preferred.
