Sterile Processing Department Supervisor - Weekends

Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

The Sterile Processing Department Supervisor coordinates, facilitates, and supervises the distribution, replenishment, receipt, and return of specialty/replacement instruments and supplies to the OR, Women's Center, and other service provided areas; monitors instrument maintenance and repairs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for maintaining AAMI and AORN standards, current clinical skills, and knowledge in multiple areas of practice
  • Adheres to and enforces hospital/departmental policies, procedures, and standards while demonstrating a professional and positive image
  • Recommends and supports policies and standards to ensure sterilization practices that meet the state and national standards
  • Assists with continuous education plans and implementation in collaboration with SPD and perioperative leaders
  • Works closely with Infection Prevention and Control to ensure infection controls standards are met
  • Functions in the instrument reprocessing assignment rotation as needed
  • Decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes equipment and instrumentation according to instructions for use
  • Operates all relevant department equipment
  • Supports consistent regulatory readiness for unit/area via rounding, coaching, and monitoring
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and supervises the distribution, replenishment, receipt, and return of specialty/replacement instruments and supplies to the OR and other service provided areas; monitors instrument maintenance and repairs
  • Resolves discrepancy issues, rotates supplies with expiration dates, and communicates back to customers issues concerning sterilization
  • Initiates process improvement activities that provide greater clinical reliability, improved functional use of space and resources that apply to instrument care and sterilization
  • Provides economic and purchasing insight to clinical staff; applies clinical applications and effectiveness to sterilization practices and policies; advises vendors to meet the clinical and economic interests of Eskenazi Health
  • Assists with annual physical inventory counts and financial valuation of "owned" inventory assets
  • Initiates vendor competition for best product/best price with emphasis on long-term economic advantage and patient outcomes
  • Supports vendor guidelines and policies in the best interest of Eskenazi Health
  • Works with biomedical and clinical staff related to maintenance and training
  • Maintains records appropriate to monitor sterilization processes
  • Leads by example

  • Serves as a resource for staff by answering questions, helping troubleshoot, identify, and resolve problems
  • Encourages team effort by working with and assisting coworkers
  • Coordinates vendor visitation in the instrument room

  • Counsels and develops staff in conjunction with manager
  • May evaluate and make recommendations regarding staff performance
  • Facilitates disciplinary action and improvement plans in conjunction with manager
  • Acts as a super user for in-service and educational competency training for staff
  • Trains OR and instrument room staff regarding sterilization and processes
  • Plans and implements education for new and existing processes in conjunction with SPD manager
  • Participates in ordering processes
  • Maintains good relationships with served areas, vendors, staff, and area instrument reprocessing departments
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in working with staff, physicians, and other departments, both internal and external, including verbal and non-verbal skills
  • Assists Service Line Coordinators, Educators, Managers, and Directors as needed with overall operation of the department
  • Understands and applies crisis management and critical incident skills when needed and is a resource for unit/area emergencies, disasters, or other emergent situations

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • A minimum of 3 years related hospital experience in instrument reprocessing/sterilization
  • CRCST (Certified, Registered, Central Service Technician) designation or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)
  • One of the following certifications:
    • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist)
    • CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist)
    • CHL (Certified Health Leader)
    • CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocessor)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Computer experience in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and inventory ordering and control systems
  • Knowledge of perioperative case cart systems
  • Ability to facilitate and lead workgroups/product evaluations
  • Ability to initiate and complete projects
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal relationship skills
