This posting seeks to fill a management vacancy in the P YT TRANSMISSION PLANNING Department of the P T&D AND INTERCONNECTION PLNG Division at Hawaiian Electric Company. The role is either a Transmission Planning Engineer I or Transmission Planning Engineer II, whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

Transmission Planning Engineer I

Job Function: Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital programs and vendor proposals for HECO, MECO and HELCO.

Essential Functions:

  • Independently analyzes, evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques using Power Flow and System Analysis programs.
  • Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions.
  • Prepares reports and recommendations and related planning studies in accordance with standard electrical systems modeling practices.
  • Conducts planning studies, basic economic studies and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares cost estimates, cash flows, schedules, based upon data received from the Engineering Department.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions on selected projects.
  • Coordinates design effects by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for interconnection planning services and equipment and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering planning acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Very good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.

Transmission Planning Engineer II

Job Function: Under direct supervision of higher level engineers, performs transmission planning analyses to support capital programs, long range resource plans, developer proposals, and investigation of system contingency events for HECO, MECO and HELCO.

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts steady-state and transient stability analysis on the transmission system to support resource planning, and prepares written reports for distribution to key external stakeholders.
  • Conducts transmission planning and transient stability analysis to support capital project justifications, company initiatives, outage investigations, etc.
  • Supports requests for proposal for transmission planning services, evaluates proposals and makes recommendations.
  • Provides inter-department technical support, develops and/or evaluates new models for existing resources and emerging technologies.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and practices of transmission system planning, operation and modeling; and generating unit operation and modeling.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles of the design, operation, and modeling of emerging technologies such as power electronics, wind turbines, and energy storage systems.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Working knowledge of City, State and Federal laws, regulations and procedures as related to specific projects and assignments.
  • Demonstrated effective written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, effective oral and listening communications skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fully capable and efficient in conducting PSSE Load Flow analysis and PSSE Dynamic analysis.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated in-depth analytical skills.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.

Experience Requirements:

  • Extensive (5 years) experience in the planning of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and arrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities; investigation and analysis of system contingency events.
  • A BS degree in engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited engineering school may be substituted for eight (8) years of experience.
  • State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline is desirable.

Hiring Range:

The hiring range for the Transmission Planning Engineer I position is $78,000.00 to $99,600.00. The hiring range for the Transmission Planning Engineer II position is $97,900.00 to $125,000.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
