Substation Service Engineer Job Function

Provides engineering support in the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, training, project management, reliability and root cause analysis, and purchasing of substation equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Provides engineering support to the department for the construction and maintenance of the transmission and distribution systems.
  • Conducts investigations, working with field personnel and Equipment Manufacturers to resolve equipment problems.
  • Assures the proper and complete integration of new types of equipment into the system.
  • Prepares and submits studies and engineering requests as needed to resolve problem areas identified through reviewing maintenance and test reports.
  • Establishes the maintenance documentation used to define the preventative maintenance programs.
  • Develops tool and test equipment requirements with the supervisors, including capital budget requests and cost justification.
  • Implements specific environmental assignments.
  • Assists Superintendent with administrative duties.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities.

Basic Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements: Thorough working knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering fundamentals, as applied to the electric utility industry, normally acquired through college level courses at an accredited college or equivalent experience. A BSEE will nominally fulfill the knowledge requirement. Professional Engineer license strongly desirable. Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems for spreadsheet, word processing, etc., software applications. Understanding of the principles of operation and maintenance of substation equipment in an electric utility environment or equivalent experience. Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence. Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

Skills Requirements: Excellent oral, written and listening skills. Strong interpersonal skills to influence various groups or individuals. Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities. Ability to read, interpret and explain to others complex instructions relating to equipment operation, testing and maintenance. Analytical, computational, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle various projects and programs. Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy.

Experience Requirements: 5-7 years of working experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems in an electric utility environment. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited engineering school in Electrical Engineering or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or equivalent experience. State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in relevant discipline is highly desired in order to stamp drawings and designs required to obtain construction and building permits.

Senior Substation Service Engineer Job Function

Supervises and directs all Substation Service Engineer and Substation Predictive Maintenance activities relating to inspections, equipment testing, troubleshooting, data collection and analysis, for all substations and assigned vaults. Represent the Division in a Leadership position in various activities that will fulfill the Company's goals and objectives.

Essential Functions

  • Manages, directs, and develops activities for the Substation Service Engineer I & II, Field Technologist and Substation Predictive Maintenance Specialist.
  • Able to perform all required responsibilities of a Substation Service Engineer II.
  • Serves on various committees as required by representing the Division in a leadership role, working with other departments, regarding changes or additions to the electrical system, IMT (Incident Management Team), Risk Management, ERP Replacement/Enhancements, Smart Grid Technology, Asset Management and Reliability/Resilience Strategies, Renewable Energy Initiatives, etc.
  • Leads and consults with Manufacturers, Engineering, Operations departments, Project Management, and Contractors to ascertain proper equipment design, planning, scheduling, troubleshooting, operational performance and emergency response.
  • Assists Superintendent with administrative duties.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities.
