Research Engineer

Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. Monthly salary range: $4,584 -$7,084/Mon.

Duties:

  • Leads and performs research and development into the general topics of mechanical engineering, and materials processing and characterization, and analyzes collected measurements.
  • Proposes the scope of work, plans work and resources; performs and supervises the work; designs and constructs necessary technical apparatus; prepares budgets, parts lists, and bills of materials; procures supplies; and assists with publishing results of these efforts.
  • Drafts technical reports and project updates for extramural projects.
  • Works within multi-disciplinary and multi-agency (e.g., Department of Defense, State of Hawaii and private industry) teams.
  • Manages a laboratory environment by supervising and maintaining smooth operation of the laboratory.
  • Creates and implements organizational systems, communicates with vendors, works with the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH) and University staff to ensure timely placement of necessary orders and documentation.
  • Develops and implements safety compliance and training systems.
  • Trains users on the safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Develops safe operating procedures and training materials for equipment.
  • Documents training per campus EHandS requirements.
  • Contributes to preparation of research proposals, literature reviews, work plans, budgets, and related paperwork.
  • Explores, proposes, and tests additional ideas that may be grown into new research as time and resources permit.

Primary Qualifications:

  • Education: Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.
  • Experience: One to three (1-3) years of scientific or engineering research experience, which may include paid/unpaid experience. This includes at least six (6) months of demonstrated experience in the practice of engineering.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge and experience in general mechanical engineering skills and analysis including heat transfer, system dynamics, and materials science. Knowledge and experience in basic engineering skills (CAD/CAM, machine shop fabrication, engineering design).
  • Abilities and Skills: Must be a U.S. Citizen, due to Department of Defense (DoD) security requirements to meet eligibility requirements for access to controlled unclassified information. Some work may require access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled resources or possible categorization of work output as ITAR-controlled, therefore employees need to be qualified to work on projects with ITAR requirements. Must be able to analyze and interpret visual/graphical data and design information. Ability to write technical documents and use library resources. Excellent written and communication skills. Willingness to apply or learn necessary specialized software skills (e.g., Matlab, Labview, Comsol, L-Edit, etc.). Possess a strong background in mechanical design, mechanical design software (CAD/CAM), and fabrication of components.

Post Offer/Employment Conditions:

  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
  • Must be able to complete the UH Laboratory Safety training within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
