SCADA Integration Engineer I

Job Function:

Performs on-site field work including conducting tailboards, creating and submitting Limited Holdoff requests, oversee quality and accuracy of work performed in the field.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs on-site field work including conducting tailboards, creating and submitting Limited Holdoff requests, oversee quality and accuracy of work performed in the field.
  • Develops and performs required equipment testing prior to placing in-service.
  • Prepares and submits Equipment Approval documents for equipment in-service authorization.
  • Participates in the addition of co-generation and renewable sources added to the HECO system by collaboratively reviewing, installing, testing, and approving associated SCADA equipment.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and gives recommendations to test results or test data.
  • Designs, tests, documents, updates, and configures system hardware, communications, telemetry, and operating system software to optimize system control and monitoring applications specific to project design and operating requirements, including configuring, testing, and monitoring using various communication protocols.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to electrical drawings, system plans troubleshooting, calibration procedures, test data and device settings.
  • Recommends and implements equipment modifications, including field modifications. Compiles performance data and performs failure analysis to improve equipment reliability.
  • Runs diagnostic routines and analyzes system malfunctions on front end processors, modems, computer peripherals, remote terminal units, generator control units, generator control panels, transducers, recorders, power supplies, watt-hour meters and relays. Integrates, tests, monitors, and analyzes power quality instruments and data.
  • Manages Instrument and Controls field crews and coordinates work with other divisions, departments, customers, contractors and manufacturers. Assists Engineering departments in special projects.
  • Technical support of IP Networking, optimizing system performance and network security which includes data encryption. Comply with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards, i.e., cyber security pertaining to control systems.
  • Prepares special reports, makes sketches, graphs, and conducts special tests. Considers and analyzes new technologies.
  • Provides engineering level technical support to Substation, Relay Shop, System Operations, Engineering, Power Plant, IT/Telecom, Technical Services, Project Management and others.
  • Must be available for emergency calls at all times.
  • Supports renewable and green initiatives and smart grid technologies.
  • Supports One Company Substation & Meter Operations (SMO) across all service areas.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

Basic Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements:

  • BS degree in Engineering in a relevant discipline from an accredited college. Engineering school is preferred.
  • Thorough working knowledge of digital logic, electronics, electrical engineering fundamentals, and microprocessor based technology normally acquired through college level engineering courses, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of communications systems fundamentals, telemetry, various test equipment, computer systems software, firmware and programming languages.
  • Working knowledge of various SCADA communication protocols such as Landis & Gyr 8979, IEC61850, Modbus, and DNP 3.0.
  • Working knowledge of continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

Skills Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve technical problems in the field under adverse conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for frequent or required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.

Experience Requirements:

  • 4-6 years of engineering experience working with SCADA systems, telecommunications, system commissioning or digital and electronic computer and control systems. A BS in Engineering may be substituted for up to 4 years of experience.

SCADA Integration Engineer II

Job Function:

Provides engineering level technical support in the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Energy Management System (EMS) hardware, and computer/electronics equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides engineering level technical support in the installation, operation, and maintenance of the EMS hardware and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and other computer/electronic equipment. Performs on-site field work.
  • Runs diagnostic routines and analyzes system malfunctions on front end processors, modems, computer peripherals, remote terminal units, generator control units, generator control panels, transducers, recorders, power supplies, watt-hour meters and relays. Integrate, test, monitor, and analyze power quality instruments and data.
  • Recommends and implements equipment modifications. Compiles performance data and performs failure analysis to improve equipment reliability.
  • Develops and reviews test, troubleshooting, alignment, and calibration procedures and analyzes and evaluates test data.
  • Develops circuit diagrams for technicians' guidance. Develops diagnostics and implements hardware test equipment for computer and electronic systems.
  • Design, test, document, update, and configure system hardware, communications, telemetry, and operating system software to optimize system control and monitoring applications specific to project design and operating requirements; including configuring, testing, and monitoring Modbus, DNP, Telegyr-8979, TCP/IP, and other protocols.
  • Knowledge of Networking. Integration, test and manage telecom equipment including firewalls, switches, and routers. Perform technical support optimizing system performance and network security which includes data encryption. Comply with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards, i.e. cyber security pertaining to control systems.
  • Support renewable and green initiatives and smart grid technologies.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
