We're a global, multi-disciplinary team that's putting the innovative power of technology to work and transforming tomorrow. At HARMAN Automotive, we give you the keys to fast-track your career.
- Engineer audio systems and integrated technology platforms that augment the driving experience
- Combine ingenuity, in-depth research, and a spirit of collaboration with design and engineering excellence
- Advance in-vehicle infotainment, safety, efficiency, and enjoyment
About the Role
As a Android Automotive App Developer, you will build innovative in‑vehicle applications for infotainment systems powered by Android Automotive OS (AAOS). This is an individual contributor role that involves designing end‑to‑end app features, integrating with vehicle services, and developing intuitive UIs optimized for in-car environments. You will work with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and modern Android frameworks to deliver high‑performance, safe, and user‑friendly automotive experiences. You will also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, guide junior developers, and ensure engineering excellence throughout the development lifecycle.
What You Will Do
- Lead the design, development, and enhancement of Android Automotive applications using Kotlin and modern Android architecture components.
- Build dynamic and responsive UIs using Jetpack Compose, ensuring compliance with AAOS UX guidelines and in‑car HMI constraints.
- Integrate applications with vehicle services, OEM APIs, system events, and middleware layers where required.
- Define application-level architecture, technical design specifications, and requirement documentation.
- Produce high-quality technical artifacts including architecture diagrams, high-level and low-level design documents.
- Act as a Scrum Lead for assigned features, owning sprint planning, task allocation, and progress tracking.
- Mentor developers on modern Android development practices, architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI), performance tuning, Compose best practices, and debugging techniques.
- Establish and enforce industry-standard development processes including code reviews, static analysis, security checks, Git workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
- Collaborate with validation and QA teams to define test strategies, ensure requirement coverage, and support automotive-grade testing.
What You Need to Be Successful
- Strong understanding of Android app development, with hands-on experience building apps for Android Automotive OS (AAOS).
- 6+ years of Android development experience, including at least 3+ years with Kotlin.
- Proficiency in modern Android development frameworks:
- Kotlin
- Jetpack Compose
- Android Jetpack components (ViewModel, LiveData/Flow, Navigation, Room, WorkManager)
- Solid programming fundamentals with strong knowledge of object-oriented concepts, design patterns, and clean architecture.
- In-depth understanding of Android app components—Activities, Services, Broadcast Receivers, Content Providers—and IPC mechanisms (Intents, Binder, Messenger, AIDL).
- Experience building UI for automotive environments, including templates, navigation patterns, and in-car UX compliance.
- Hands-on experience writing unit and UI tests using JUnit, Mockito, Robolectric, Espresso, or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Agile Scrum methodologies and full Android application lifecycle.
- Ability to independently drive feature design, handle complex tasks, and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in cross-functional environments.
Bonus Points if You Have
- Familiarity with Android Internals, NDK, HAL, or automotive middleware.
- Experience with Automotive Car UI Templates, navigation, GPS functionalities, or location-based automotive apps.
- Certification in Android development (Associate Android Developer, Kotlin certifications, etc.).
- Experience working in automotive-grade environments (IVI, connected car, embedded systems).
- Exposure to global product development teams and multi-region collaboration.
What Makes You Eligible
- Eligible to work in the required geography and comply with organizational compliance/security requirements.
- Willingness to work in a hybrid or onsite model as project needs.
- Flexibility to collaborate with global teams.
- Occasional travel readiness (if required for integration, workshops, or testing).
- Fluent in English with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and communication.
