The Director of Nursing Services (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and clinical performance of the nursing department. The DON ensures delivery of high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, staff development, and continuous quality improvement. This role carries full accountability for nursing operations and works in close partnership with the Administrator and interdisciplinary leadership team.
Clinical Leadership & Operations
Lead all nursing operations (RN, LVN, CNA)
Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care
Oversee assessments, care planning, and clinical documentation
Maintain strong clinical presence through rounding and team engagement
Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness
Maintain ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
Lead survey readiness and response efforts
Implement and monitor policies aligned with current standards of care
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, hire, and develop nursing staff
Drive staff engagement, retention, and accountability
Oversee staffing, scheduling, and performance management
Quality Improvement
Lead QAPI initiatives and monitor key clinical indicators
Implement action plans to improve outcomes and reduce risk
Partner with interdisciplinary teams to drive continuous improvement
Administrative Oversight
Manage departmental budgets and resource allocation
Collaborate with physicians, consultants, and external partners
Serve as liaison to residents, families, and regulatory agencies
Required: Active California RN license 5+ years of nursing experience in SNF or long-term care 3+ years of leadership experience (DON, ADON, or equivalent) Strong knowledge of Title 22 and CMS regulations
Preferred: Prior DON experience in a SNF ADON ready to step into a DON role Experience with MDS/RAI/PPS (RAC-CT preferred) BSN
