Job Posting

This position is a support position for the data and technology needs of the entire department. In addition to front-end maintenance of CAD/RMS/Mobile Data systems, the individual will oversee departmental radio and telecommunications needs, inventory and maintenance. Crime analysis functions and records requests will be generated based on administrative requests using skills and knowledge acquired in training.

Essential duties include:

  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of CAD/RMS/Mobile Data systems; acquisition and maintenance of department radios and radio consoles.
  • Troubleshoot CAD/RMS/Mobile Data systems end-user issues including, connectivity, data integrity and internal code and data table content.
  • Use PC Anywhere to gain access to various servers and workstations to troubleshoot end-user issues.
  • Communicate effectively with the Technology Support Specialist II and department head regarding system and network issues.
  • Communicate effectively with the Technology Support Specialist II and the Department Head for GIS issues and assist with transitions and updates of GIS data to the CAD system.
  • Troubleshoot conventional and trunked radio systems.
  • Assist with management of department radio inventory and maintenance needs.
  • Assist in the requisition of telecommunications and radio equipment, to include bid preparation, equipment specifications and evaluation of systems.
  • Manage ALI database.
  • Process records requests and reports for data analysis; assist with capital needs for communications and police personnel.
  • Using Crystal Reports Program, extract requested data from the system data warehouse to present to administration.
  • Process voice recording and CAD records requests for District Attorney's Office, State of Alaska or interested third party as required.
  • Utilize crime analysis tools to generate reports for police department administration and City officials as needed.
  • Communicate and work effectively with coworkers from both the communications and police departments, representatives of other agencies, government officials, and media when needed.
  • Manage communications equipment inventory and report any needs to the Technology Support Specialist II.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special job assignments or projects as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Exemplary clerical and communication skills, calm demeanor, professional attitude, and a courteous disposition.
  • Obtain and maintain technical skills and knowledge necessary to perform required duties as described.
  • Type at a net speed of 40 words per minute.
  • Travel for training and skills maintenance.
  • Perform telecommunications related functions and communicate effectively, and express ideas clearly and concisely both in oral and written communications.
  • Accurately track and submit documents to/from agencies and personnel, as needed.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all calls, conversations, and written materials.
  • Present reports and data to large audiences.
  • Effectively communicate with law enforcement, government, and communications personnel.
  • Homeland Security orientation tests (Incident Command Systems) will be required as a term of employment taken on-line: Entry level IS-100.b within 30 days of date hire; IS-200.b, IS-700.a, and IS-800.b within one year from date of hire.

Experience, education certificates, and licenses include:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Two years' experience in troubleshooting, repair of computers, and radio communications equipment. Knowledge and use of software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, computerized mapping, ArcGIS, database, and radio programming software is desired.
  • Background in Emergency Services, Information Technology, Public Safety Communications, or military related experience is desired.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of application and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must provide a current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record from the state in which driver’s license is held.
  • Must obtain a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Be able to obtain and hold a security clearance meeting the requirements of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).
  • Qualify and pass all initial and yearly APSIN exams. Protection of APSIN information required by state law.
  • Must be able to pass extensive background check.
