The position involves performing inspections, maintenance, construction, and repair of county and inter-county drains and other structures under the direction of the Drain Operations and Maintenance Lead Worker. It also includes operating, maintaining, and repairing department vehicles and equipment, responding to environmental incidents and flood emergencies.

Essential Functions

The essential functions include:

  • Inspecting, maintaining, constructing, and repairing county and inter-county drains and lake level structures.
  • Operating and transporting department vehicles and equipment to job sites.
  • Repairing and maintaining department heavy and light vehicles and equipment.
  • Documenting drain inspections, maintenance, construction, and repair work.
  • Complying with state and federal statutes related to drain operations and maintenance.
  • Performing emergency response involving drain operations and maintenance.
  • Interacting with private landowners and the general public on county and inter-county drains.
  • Participating in a 24-hour and weekend/holiday on-call emergency flood and environmental response system.

Employment Qualifications

The qualifications include:

  • Specialized or technical training equivalent to 12 credit hours of college level training.
  • Vocational training in welding and machine and vehicle maintenance preferred.
  • Three years of experience including operation of heavy equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair; and drain operation and maintenance or construction experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License.
  • Certification of Commercial Pesticide Applicator preferred.
  • Training in Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control, Confined Space Entry, Trench Safety, Traffic Safety, Environmental Incident Response, MIOSHA Standards and CPR/Stand First Aid.

  • Exposure to vibrations and oscillating movements.
  • Exposure to close quarters.
  • Use of personal protection equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including sitting, standing, walking, climbing, lifting, etc.
  • Ability to communicate and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to operate a PC/laptop and handle varying levels of stress.
