Transportation Engineering Position

Under broad supervision, performs engineering assignments in specialized areas. Provides engineering assistance with plans, designs, costs and the coordination of new transportation construction or maintenance activities.

Job Specific Duties

Serves as an engineer in one of five design teams that are responsible for developing and maintaining GDOT roadway design policies and performing QA reviews. These teams are organized into the following five areas: (1) Policy, Standards, and Roadside Design; (2) Roadway Hydraulics; (3) Roadway Lighting; (4) Water Resources; and (5) Conceptual Design.

This position will serve within the Standards and Roadside Design section of the Policy, Standards, and Roadside Design group and may be asked to support other teams as needs arise. This position will be responsible for performing a wide range of services related to the revision, development, and publication of construction standards and details and roadside design. Serves as a subject matter expert for the Department including the preparation of studies and design, review of engineering deliverables and advises on the application of policy to engineering decision making. Provides instruction for implementation of new and existing policy and represents the Department at internal and external meetings. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Revises existing or develops new construction standards and details.
  • Assists in the annual compilation and publication of the Construction Standards and Details Book.
  • Reviews shop drawings for Nonstandard concrete structures.
  • Reviews NCHRP studies for applicable roadside safety hardware practices and designs.
  • Reviews and evaluates roadside safety hardware submittals for acceptability and inclusion on the QPL.
  • Assists in design records research for legal cases.
  • Provides on-call SME support to project managers and design phase leaders.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of national and state-level best practices and research. Attending conferences and training as appropriate.
  • Assists in updating GDOT design policies and construction standards/details where needed.
  • Performs reviews of plans and reports relating to roadside design.
  • Provides training related to design of roadside design and construction standards and details.
  • Serves as a representative on the New Products Evaluation Committee and the Standard Specifications review committee.

Minimum Qualifications

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include the Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Qualifications.

State Entry Qualifications :

路 Bachelor's degree in engineering from an A.B.E.T accredited program OR equivalent degree in a related field and 5 years of job - related experience without EIT OR a Valid Engineering in -Training (EIT) certificate and (1) year of job-related experience OR Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the State of Georgia and (1) year of job - related experience.

Note: For International Degrees: Applicants with Bachelor's degree from an international institution must submit a course-by-course evaluation from a GDOT approved credentialing provider.

Agency Specific Qualifications:

路 Demonstrated experience in highway/transportation engineering.

路 Demonstrated experience in preparing calculations, quantities and cost estimates associated with highway/transportation projects.

路 Demonstrated experience with engineering mathematical reasoning and design computations.

路 Demonstrated experience generating project plans through the use of computer-aided drafting and/or design (CADD).

路 Demonstrated experience analyzing and formulating solutions to complex design problems and recommending the best solution.

路 Demonstrated experience implementing Quality Control for engineering reports and plans.

路 Committed to providing quality customer service.

路 Displays a high level of professional integrity and ethical conduct.

In addition, an employee must have an overall ePerformance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation. Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee's favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
