Clinical Support Specialist, Surgery (ENT)

Position Summary

Assist physician in providing specific treatments and procedures, and facilitating, and efficient patient care. Perform administrative duties as assigned by physician.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Manages patient preparation by assisting physicians and/or registered nurses by taking and recording patient histories, height, weight, vital signs.
  2. Prepares patient for examination by preparing for various specimen collections.
  3. Administers oral and injectable (intramuscular and subcutaneous) as prescribed by the physician. Competency must be demonstrated to a registered nurse prior to performing such function. Has knowledge of medication actions, proper dosing & side effects.
  4. Assists physicians with minor procedures. Proficient with sterile technique.
  5. Explains tests and procedures including pre & post-op instructions to patients.
  6. Retrieves lab results and surgical path reports from computer (as well as reference labs) and communicates results/ data to physician and/or registered nurse. Notifies reference labs for specimen pick-up. Orders lab supplies as directed by registered nurse. Keeps up to date with what insurance company participates with what lab for specimen collections.
  7. Performs sterilization of instruments as necessary and ensures valid expiration date.
  8. Reviews progress notes in patient's chart to prepare for clinic visit. Prepares forms for use during patient visit. Records height weight, vital signs & "Meaningful Use" into patients' medical record. Has knowledge of EMR usage.
  9. Schedules patient appointments for radiology (including CT-scan, MRI, ultrasound), Cytopathology (fine needle aspiration), vascular lab, etc. Completes appropriate forms, gives patient instruction and forms, and records information in patients chart.
  10. Answers the telephone and transfers calls to appropriate personnel.
  11. Triage calls by obtaining pertinent information from caller & present info to physician/ RN for appropriate decision making.
  12. Remove sutures/staples as requested by physician. Competency must be demonstrated to your Clinical Manager.
  13. Performs simple and complex wound care, including irrigations with clean and sterile dressing Changes. Able to remove and repack deep wound dressings as directed by physician.
  14. Provides a clean environment for clinic and provides for inventory and proper care of equipment.
  15. Takes inventory of supplies, equipment and medication. Responsible for ordering and seeing that necessary supplies/equipment is available and/or in proper working order for clinic.
  16. Maintains and improves knowledge and expertise through continuing training, to include CPR certification.
  17. Conducts computerized and on-line research as needed to support ongoing and future research projects
  18. May observe and review surgical procedures to ensure knowledge base

Admin Duties

Assist assigned physician with the following duties:

  1. Assisting with the scheduling of tests/procedures.
  2. Retrieve and return calls from the triage/Rx phone line
  3. Prepare surgical notes/results for pending surgery
  4. Pre & post-op instructions.
  5. Post-op calls to patient.
  6. Gather all path report and operative reports for post-op visits
  7. Instruct patient on pre-surgical clearances
  8. Verify orders/Schedule radiology procedures
  9. Clinically assisting physician as needed.
  10. Tracking clinical data as requested by physician

Other Related Duties

  1. Able to demonstrate sterile technique.
  2. Ability to steam sterilizes instruments/packs, follows up to assure they are redone on a monthly basis if expired.
  3. Ability to clean a variety of instruments with proper cold sterilization.
  4. Ability to keep correct type of instruments in exam rooms.
  5. Must be familiar with instruments for ENT.
  6. Must be flexible in cross covering in all clinics.
  7. Takes initiative in stocking all exam rooms when needed,
  8. Orders supplies on a weekly basis or as needed. Ensures the order arrives and accounts, monitors for back-ordered item.
  9. May be involved with assisting new medical students, interns, and others about the clinic and working area.
  10. Ability to draw up correct drug medication for physician and have the ability to administer IM, Sub Q.

Education

Bachelor's degree or higher, training and experience is necessary.

Experience

At least one year of relevant clinical experience is required.

Competencies

Ability to input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner. Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.

Physical Requirements

  • Walk, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulder frequently in an office setting.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift or carry and frequently push or pull up to 100 lbs. as part of the role
  • Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
