System Engineer For Evaporative Fuel Systems

System Engineering plays a critical role in integrating the highly complex and interconnected systems that define modern vehicles. By working across traditional engineering boundaries, System Engineering ensures customer-focused execution of vehicle-level features and delivers robust, compliant system performance.

We are seeking an experienced System Engineer for Evaporative Fuel Systems to lead the global development strategy for hydrocarbon emissions compliance. In this role, you will own evaporative system architecture end-to-end: defining requirements, developing balanced system strategies, driving cross-functional alignment, and ensuring that future internal combustion engine products meet evaporative emissions regulations worldwide.

Using system modeling, buck and vehicle testing, requirements development, and competitive benchmarking, you will create and deploy the technical roadmap for evaporative and canister performance at both the system and subsystem levels. You will also support lab-based testing, shed compliance assessments, certification processes, and issue resolution throughout the development cycle.

This position collaborates extensively with Fuel Systems, Propulsion Software and Calibration, Safety, SUFS, and additional cross-functional partners. We are looking for a strong technical leader who can guide decisions, influence without authority, and drive system integration in a fast-moving environment.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and own the Hydrocarbon System Balance Strategy at the system and subsystem levels.
  • Create, release, and maintain System Technical Specifications.
  • Develop and update System DFMEAs to ensure robust design and validation.
  • Partner with the Evaporative Technical Specialist to model system behavior and define balanced architectures.
  • Ensure system requirements meet all feature, safety, and regulatory expectations.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and support PRTS for vehicle-level evaporative issues.
  • Benchmark competitors to identify best-in-class hardware and system strategies.
  • Collaborate with subsystem and component teams to optimize architecture and tradeoffs.
  • Support scoping and planning of Advanced Technology Work (ATW) projects.
  • Aid evaporative emission certification engineers across all global regions.
  • Guide or support vehicle testing for system verification, control development, and issue resolution.
  • Work with the Evaporative Emissions Technical Fellow to develop long-term regulatory and compliance strategy.
  • Develop and maintain the requirements test plan within ETM.

What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical, Computer Science Engineering, or related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of fuel system hardware, controls, diagnostics, and failure modes.
  • Strong understanding of system development, verification, validation, and vehicle development process.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional investigation across powertrain, electrical, calibration, controls, and fuel system teams.
  • Experience conducting competitive benchmarking to establish system performance targets.
  • Ability to evaluate and communicate tradeoffs between system architectures and feature performance.
  • High level analytical skills with a track record of resolving complex, unusual technical problems.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to influence and guide others.
  • Demonstrated decision-making capability and willingness to assume ownership and risk.
  • Approachable, collaborative, open-minded, and committed to mentoring others.
  • DFSS Black Belt certification.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Working knowledge of evaporative fuel systems, regulations, and testing methods.
  • Experience with calibration development and embedded software.
  • Strong background in Systems Engineering methods (e.g., structured design) and scoping of systems work products.
  • Understanding of vehicle integration and interactions with propulsion controls and power subsystems.
  • Familiarity with GM serial data communication and distributed real-time control systems.
  • Experience with diagnostic and embedded tools (INCA, VSpy).
  • Proficiency with systems engineering tools (DNG, FIT, Jira).
  • Proven application of analytical tools to solve complex systems problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and challenge legacy methods with data-driven solutions.
  • Experience resolving vehicle-level integration issues across system experts.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to negotiate and influence across teams.
  • Familiarity with GM Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP).
