Senior Environmental Engineer
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].
As a Senior Environmental Engineer, this is an excellent opportunity to share your environmental expertise and work with highly skilled environmental professionals on the Strategic Environmental Solutions (SES) Team. The SES Team is responsible for providing leadership and direction globally on Environmental Compliance Programs & Systems, Environmental Permitting, Environmental Operational Support, Regulatory Development Initiatives and Regulatory Reporting.
This role is a technical position with the responsibility of providing support to our environmental community and EV partners, fostering sustainable solutions to environmental issues. As a technical support person within the Global Environmental Operations (GEO) team, your role is focused on developing strategies, looking ahead and growing the capacity for the future success of GM and the team. This role will collaborate with stakeholders across all GM sectors that are engaged in GM's electrification strategies, supporting GM's on-going environmental compliance programs.
What You'll Do:
- Develop and drive common strategic direction and grow capacity for future success by developing long-term environmental solutions to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and other pertinent requirements. Responsible to execute GEO's strategic plans for GM's Environmental compliance program, supporting waste and water management of GM's EV transformation, and to track and measure program success in support of GM's performance goals.
- Collaborate with Global and Regional teams to support GM's Global Enterprise Environmental Management System. Function as a subject matter expert (SME) in areas assigned and provide support across all Global regions. Develop and support corporate guidance documents in area of expertise, develop protocols and support self-assessment and validation processes to ensure environmental compliance.
- Engage with stakeholders to ensure continual improvement and support of new program and project implementation in the space of GM's EV transformation.
- Develop creative solutions to complex environmental challenges and support innovation to meet GM goals and initiatives. Drive the team towards results in a manner that is truthful and demonstrates strength of character.
- Engage with environmental leaders, GM Stakeholders, suppliers and Agencies to foster teamwork, find solutions, and value diversity. Build bridges by engaging with our Business Partners (e.g. GM Legal, Public Policy, GM Staffs) to enable success for the GM and the organization, as well as meeting regulatory compliance requirements.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Role model and clearly communicate and teach GM's vision, mission and behaviors that cultivate our culture.
- Lead in the development of new environmental facility installation/construction permits and the renewal of facility operational permits. This includes the review and development of applications, draft permits, and interface/negotiate conditions with government agencies.
- Support GM site environmental engineers, along with all Business Partners, in their understanding and implementation of permit and regulatory requirements.
- Utilize knowledge, strengths and environmental expertise to mentor and grow our teams and talent.
- Engage team, provide solutions and maintain skills to solve compliance challenges.
- Lead regulatory reporting initiatives.
- Develop and maintain a knowledge on Federal and State regulations as they relate to GM Operations.
- Support GM's efforts with advocacy partners in providing technical knowledge to effectively comment, impact and negotiate proposed rules and regulations.
Your Skills & Abilities:
- College degree with a major in engineering or related sciences with emphasis on environmental preferred
- 4+ years experience in environmental engineering
- Experience and working knowledge of environmental permitting
- Proven experience leading, managing or overseeing small teams, projects and/or contracted environmental service providers
- Work independently and collaboratively for effective project management and communication with peers, strategic partners, and leadership.
- Employ systems thinking to understand and optimize interconnected components.
- Analyze data and develop materials to communicate strategic Environmental program initiatives.
- Apply qualitative and quantitative skills relevant to environmental programs (e.g., modeling, budgeting, financial analysis, life cycle assessment, environmental and risk communication).
- Expertise to investigate environmental challenges and apply sound technical judgment to develop solutions.
- Apply best practices in manufacturing and non-manufacturing contexts.
- Act as a change agent.
- Must be able to travel regularly, to support plant operations, along with program and facility launch activities.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge:
- Experience in auto related manufacturing operations at multiple sites (Battery, Foundry, Machining, Assembly, Stamping)
- Understanding of the plant manufacturing systems including production processes, wastewater discharges, storm water management, air emissions impacts, sewer systems, chemical usage, and waste management/recycling programs, to ensure effective decision-making and regulatory compliance
- Strong environmental knowledge in air, water and waste media
