Advanced Cell Engineer

This is a hands-on, on-site position at the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC) in Warren, Michigan, where you'll collaborate with top-tier engineers and researchers to push the boundaries of energy storage.

We're looking for a candidate who is passionate about advancing technologies in automotive battery cells and eager to continuously learn and grow. You will be responsible for leveraging your technical experience to complement a talented team of advanced cell engineers, to develop and implement solutions for cell designs and builds that meet project timelines.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading daily build activities of electrode production at WBCIC
  • Supporting the design, development, and validation of advanced battery cells for automotive applications
  • Applying your understanding of cell architecture, electrochemistry, and manufacturing processes to improve performance and reliability
  • Analyzing and interpreting data from cell builds and testing to identify root causes and drive improvements at the component and electrode level
  • Presenting technical findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and leadership
  • Utilizing structured problem-solving methodologies to resolve issues and optimize processes
  • Identifying innovations in operational equipment and emerging technologies, providing engineering support and recommendations to adjacent teams to promote safe operations, improved quality, and cutting-edge processes
  • Staying informed on upcoming advanced technologies within the electrification community to ensure alignment with capabilities, maintaining safety, quality, and on-time execution
  • Formulating strategic project plans to ensure the efficient execution of advanced cell engineering goals
  • Collaborating with cross-functional team members to support timely completion of cell builds at the WBCIC
  • Working with the Component and Integration Engineers to scale up build parameters for large-scale electrode builds based on test results at smaller scales
  • Establishing quality standards and workflows for electrode builds and collaborating with technicians to drive process adjustments to meet quality and yield goals
  • Developing and applying quality control systems to drive continuous improvement in safety metrics
  • Using statistical tools to quantify the relationship between build conditions and electrode parameters, and address any gaps in electrode-level performance
  • Tracking ongoing projects and providing relevant and succinct technical status updates to stakeholders at a regular cadence, identifying and escalating critical risks to maintain progress and mitigate potential roadblocks
  • Working with engineering and manufacturing teams to convert cell-level requirements into component-level specifications
  • Staying abreast of technology trends and roadmaps in electrode manufacturing for automotive grade cells

Your skills and abilities (required qualifications) include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related Science Degree
  • Hands-on electrode manufacturing experience (mixing, coating, calendaring, slitting) or similar relevant engineering experience
  • 2 years of engineering experience
  • Working knowledge of cell technology, including cell design and manufacturing processes
  • Strong analytical skills for data analysis, project management, and problem-solving
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team environment
  • Persuasive communication and presentation skills
  • High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex

What can give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications) includes:

  • Master's Degree, PhD, or other advanced certifications
  • Prior technical knowledge with automotive electrical components, preferably prismatic cells
  • Hands-on experience building electrodes for large format cells
  • Familiarity with vision systems for defect detection and quality control
  • Knowledge of quality tools and statistical process control
  • A passion for innovation and a collaborative mindset in a fast-paced environment

This role is categorized as on-site, meaning the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location on a full-time basis. This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
