Advanced Battery Cell Engineer
This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan on a full-time basis. This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Advanced Battery Cell Engineering team at the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC). The Advanced Cell Engineer will work with cutting-edge battery chemistries and cell formats, contribute to state-of-the-art cell and component design, and apply creative, strategic thinking to deliver impactful solutions that support GM's electrification goals.
We're looking for a candidate who is passionate about advanced technologies in automotive battery cells and eager to continuously learn and grow. You will be responsible for leveraging your technical experience to complement a talented team of advanced cell build engineers, to develop and implement solutions for cell design, and builds that meet program timelines. The ideal candidate must be comfortable speaking and presenting to internal and external audiences, including suppliers and vendors from a variety of backgrounds, to support GM's advanced battery cell milestones.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Implement design solutions during packaging of electrodes into stacks and cells with a specific focus on improving the safety of the cell for a given bill of materials.
- Work as a liaison between the design team, process and the cell engineering teams at the WBCIC, to drive, iterate and refine cell design to deliver acceptable outcomes towards end-of-line safety testing requirements.
- Identify innovations in operational equipment and emerging technologies, providing engineering support and recommendations to adjacent teams to promote safe operations, improved quality, and cutting-edge processes.
- Stay informed on upcoming advanced technologies within the electrification community to ensure alignment with capabilities, maintaining safety, quality, and on-time execution.
- Formulate strategic project plans to ensure the efficient execution of advanced cell engineering goals.
- Collaborate with cross-functional team members, such as cell design, product execution, research, and manufacturing engineering, to support timely completion of cell builds projects at the WBCIC.
- Establish quality standards and workflows for battery cell builds and collaborate with operators to drive process adjustments to meet quality and yield goals.
- Develop and apply quality control systems to drive continuous improvement in safety metrics.
- Track ongoing projects and provide relevant and succinct technical status updates to stakeholders at a regular cadence, identifying and escalating critical risks to maintain progress and mitigate potential roadblocks.
- Design targeted tests to identify stack design improvements and refine cell build specifications in collaboration with the design team.
- Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to convert cell-level requirements into component-level specifications.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related Science Degree
- 5+ years of battery experience or similar relevant engineering experience
- Strong analytical skills for data analysis, project management, and problem-solving
- High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team environment
- Persuasive communication and presentation skills
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master’s Degree, PhD, or other advanced certifications
- Prior technical knowledge with automotive battery cells, preferably prismatic battery cells
- Experience with automotive manufacturing or battery cell manufacturing
- Exposure to quality systems related to a manufacturing environment
