Simulation Intern

Work Arrangement: Hybrid. This internship is categorized as hybrid. The selected intern is expected to report to the office up to three times per week or as determined by the team.

Locations (in priority order): Sunnyvale, California; Mountain View, California.

About The Role:

As a Simulation intern, you'll partner with senior engineers to design, build, and launch real simulation features used daily by GM validation teams. You'll meet customers, turn their needs into clear specs, deliver high-quality code on our common simulation platform, and measure your impact. Customers likely include Hardware/Software in the Loop teams as well as Autonomous Vehicle software and test authors.

About The Team:

The GM AV Simulation team builds world-class testing and analysis related products and technologies to enable GM to accelerate development of autonomous vehicles as well as general vehicle software development. Our customers range from AV developers understanding the effects of their code on vehicle behavior, data engineers using our data pipelines to generate meaningful insights for various evaluation needs, to the release team tracking top-line performance metrics on releases. AV Simulation aims to deliver intuitive user experiences for robotics and AI engineers that accelerate GM towards a driverless future.

What You'll Do:

  • Quickly ramp up on assigned codebase, product area, and/or system.
  • Meet with your customers to learn about what they do and how you will help.
  • Complete assigned tasks efficiently with few iterations.
  • Develop, test, and deploy production-ready code across components of our simulation infrastructure.
  • Identify problem statements, outline optimal solutions, account for tradeoffs and edge cases.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and design resign.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless software integration.
  • Communicate effectively across multiple stakeholders.
  • Draw in senior developers to help when needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time, degree-seeking program and in the process of obtaining a Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Experience coding in Python or C++.
  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated software engineering experience from previous internships, work experience, coding competitions, or publications.
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
  • A background in robotics, ROS, or the AV/ADAS industry.
  • Experience with data pipelines/workflows supporting data scientists.
  • Experience building high quality dev productivity tools.
  • Experience developing high-quality software under significant latency and performance constraints.
  • Experience developing or working with safety-critical code.
  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship.
  • Graduating between December 2026 and June 2027.

Compensation:

  • The monthly salary range for this role is $9,200 per month.
  • GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2026 Student Program.
